I have a horse that has lost weight and is now "ribby" (his ribs are showing). He has lost 75 lbs. in the last 4 months.
I have gotten his teeth done, treated him for ulcers (gastrogard), upped his fats/calories etc. and he is on part time pasture.
I have had 2 fecals done on him in the last couple of months, and he only registers as having one egg in each. Pulled blood and he is perfect.
Since we've tried about everything else, my vet wants me to treat him with the Quest (moxidectin) as he thinks he might have encysted small strongyles. He thinks that this product gets better results than using the Panacur Power Pac.
My issue is this - I have a total fear of the Quest product due to the fact that I know it has caused some central nervous system symptoms in the past and I can't get that out of my mind. However, I need to do something as he's not getting any better. He feels great and is full of energy - just has a crappy hair coat and the weight loss.
Has anyone had any experience in one versus the other (Quest vs. Power Pac?)
What should I do? Opinions?

The recommendation that I was given is PowerPac for the 5 days as instructed and then 5 days later give them Quest Plus.

Quest is a broader spectrum so not only will it get the encysted, it will get everything else as well. I use Quest and have had great results with it. I have givin it to everybody, including a rescue mare that was very poor and never had a issue what so ever.

I know quite a few people and vets that feel as though the Panacur isn't working as well anymore. I would do Quest now, in 2 weeks and again in another 2 weeks. Get a weight tape and calculate weight and slightly overdose according to that. Studies show that even overdosing causes no problems. However, it is more weight specific than other dewormers.

I dont think you need to do Quest 3 times in a row. Studies have shown a 90 day clean out.

There's some research to back that up, and my vet had me do it on one of mine a couple of years ago, but I think it's addressing a specific problem and not done just because.   Despite a "good" deworming program, my horse had blood worms bad enough to mess up the circulation in his back legs, and the 2nd nastiest fecal my vet had seen in nearly 30 years of practice.   He didn't look wormy, but I was pouring the feed to him--he's been an easy keeper ever since.

I always give some Probios after worming to re-introduce good bacteria. I give FORCO daily as it feeds the good bacteria.

How long after giving Zimectrin Gold should I wait before giving Quest?

Reverse your wormers ... Quest now (Easter Time) then in 90 days it will
July 4th week and give your zimecterin

I use holidays as reminder it is worming time and the time frames from
each holiday coinsides with the type of wormer and also when larvae
are at their highest ..

New years week ... Quest
90 days
Easter ... Quest
90 days
July 4th .. zimectrin
60 days
Labor Day .. Zimectrin
60 days
Halloween .. zimectrin
60 days
Then start all over with same worming times ..

The reason I use Quest in the winter and early spring .. most of us are
still using hay and horses are more likely to snuff and nibble around
on the ground and pickup worm eggs they ordinarily would not have
encountered from previously scattered manure .

What do you mean 3 times in a row? I'm been told power pack 5 days then quest two weeks after and then every 90 days. Can you explain please?

I was replying to this post but appearantly as one poster said her vet told her to dose 3 times in a row 2 weeks apart for a heavy bloodworm load.

I would but I already gave the Zimectrin Gold. Some of the horses still had bot eggs on their legs even though they were given an Ivermectin before winter so I just wanted to make sure to take care of any bot infestation.

I've heard of it for EPM symptoms when they don't think it's actually EPM.

This was suggested to me too, as my mare keeps having high EPM titers despite treatment.  She is also not showing any of the classic nurological symptoms.

Nope
I have found ivermectrin products are hard on the immune system
I have used quest for many years with never a problem
However if I do suspect a large worm overload I do panacur power pac followed by quest
BUT I use a good probiotic while doing so.
Honestly the damage from these nasty worms are worse than quest
