Does anyone have an English Bulldog? We were considering a puppy that my neighbors were selling, but he was asking more than what we wanted to spend. It kind of worked out that way anyways because I found an EB rescue about 2 hours from me, and I like the idea of rescuing an older dog. And having the housetraining already done is a HUGE plus.

I've read a lot about them, but does anyone have any real life experience? I'm reading they fart and snore a lot, lol. Does FORCO help with their gas? Do you have to clean out wrinkles every day? How long is their life span?

It's just me and my husband and we don't travel much. We do go to horse shows and car shows, but I know EB are heat sensitive.

My pit bull farts A LOT and it stinks lol. And, she snores, but if you get her to move it usually stops.

I feel like I've heard that EB have joint issues. Don't quote me. I just feel like I've heard that before. I, also, could have been drunk and just imagined it.

I think they are a health issue mess, unfortunately due to inbreeding/overbreeding :(

My parents had one. And they are hilarious. But do stink. You have to clean their nasal folds and the fold at the top of their tail. And they can have a lot of health problems. But I love them and I think if you go to a reputable breeder you would be safer. They are expensive!!

They are pricey. My neighbor sold all of his for $3,000 each. We are looking to rescue an older one.

On my second one, they are great dogs but come with health problems, 1st bulldog was impulse purchase at Congress , could not have asked for a better dog, hip surgery at 8 months lost her to cancer at 5years, 2nd dog he is seven so far so good his only problem is he hibernates during the winter and is just now starting to move off the couch. Yes they fart a lot and snore but both of mine have had a bigger than life personality.

I love my bully. Hes the BEST! But make sure you are prepped for ALOT of vet visits. They are very high cost animals. You have to clean their "rolls" daily, sometimes a bunch of times a day depending on how deep their folds are. Mine has one roll on his face that is so deep that I have to put A&D cream in it after i clean it every day with scent free die free hypo allergenic wipes. That seems to do the trick. Mine also has awful allergies (which is VERY common) he gets one zyrtech pills with every meal. (2x a day) 98% of them have gluten and grain allergies so you more than likely will have to feed a high quality food. They cannot clean themselves AT ALL. so get ready to WIPE HIS BUM and peep a bunch of times a day too. LOL They also have "yeasty" skin so require a special antibacterial shampoo. These are things that not alot of breeders will tell you. They are seriously THE WORLDS CUTESTTTTT puppies and the most amazing funniest breed on earth, but are a full time job.

My sister in laws lived to be 16! Mine is 2 right now, we adopted him.
Some of them dont live long due to Chronic illnesses etc. But some live a VERY long time. DO your research on the family line and breeder if you are buying a puppy. :-)

I'm with you and would love to have one! I'm too tight to shell out the money to pay for one from a reputable breeder and don't want to go the cheap route only to get one with a lot of health issues. I haven't looked much into adopting one though. Keep us posted if you get one and share lots of pictures! :)

$3,000 is a deal for a puppy ha. I had a client who spent 18,000 on a female and was getting offers on puppies for 35-40,000!!!! For a dog! Ha they are adorable and so funny. We've seen quite a few ( I work at a vets ) Mostly for C-sections and AI. They are dirty little beings tho! But for many, it just becomes second nature to pull a wipe and wipe their wrinkles lol.

I recently got two of them, one in January & another in February. The female was 16 weeks when we got her & she is already having some lameness/joint issues. They definitely are a VERY sensitive breed. They do snore/snort/ sound like they can't breathe right (granted they probably can't lol). There are a couple variations on the breed though. One considered "Olde". They will be taller, leaner & not have such a pug face. The others are considered "mini"; shorter, stockier, more wrinkles, squishier face.
As for farting, we house the dogs out door & I haven't heard or smelt anything.
They are sensitive to heat & will try to find a cool place to lay down. They tend to be on the lazy side & will be stubborn about moving around too much.

They are however very comical & loving dogs. I wasn't a fan of the breed, but they are growing on me. I figured I would lay out more of the down side to the breed, because all dogs are awesome, it's just up to what you want or like!

$3k seems to be on the higher side in my area. I see them a lot for $1500-$2500.

As far as them being lazy, that's a big reason why I want one lol! When my husband and I are home, we are really laid back and love watching TV. We are wanting something that will just hang out and chill with us. Nothing that wants to go, go, go all the time. So that works out really well! lol

My mother raises English Bulldogs and just a pet quality puppy goes for 1200 - 1600. Her show quality puppies go for 2x as much and show dogs can get in the 20k + range.

edited to add: French Bulldogs are even more.....

As for as mainantence, these dogs are high mainantence animals....they have to be vetted, almost all of them are Demodetic and/ have eye problems. and yes there will have to be cleaned regularly becuase they tend to be again high maint. ....

I prefer the Frenchies :)

You can definitely find them on the cheaper side! Maybe just have to be a little patient in looking for them. If you buy from a breeder, be careful as there are A LOT of scammers. Also, If they are getting super pricey, it's usually due to the coloring. Anything tri colored, blue, lilac etc are going to be sky high in $$$

We have one. Luckily he doesn't have any major issues, he's shorter than most and his front end is wider than most. We take him in for an allergy shot every 6 months and wash him in an antifungal wash. He loves water, can't swim, but mud holes are his fav!!!! In the heat of the summer he can't stand to be out too long and you have to be careful on letting them get too worked, if they start to pant to much their throat starts to swell shut, at least ours does. We always keep Benadryl on hand just in case. Other than the health issues they are full of life. Ours loves soccer, will play catch for hours, and loves kids!

We have French Bulldogs and an English. Love my bulldogs but if I had to pick- I would go with the French hands down. They are more agreeable if that makes sense. My english is a BULLdog. Whatever she wants......she will bully you into it, lol. Sweet dog 90% of the time and 10% she is the DEVIL!

My bro's girlfriend shows and raises them and they live in Central Texas.  My brother says they are super friendly and sweet but they have a very rough time in the Texas heat.  He also says they LOVE attention so if you even talk to them they demand to be petted and adored the rest of the day.

THANK YOU! He cracks me up everyyy day! Seriously these dogs are A LOT of work but so worth it! When we adopted him the woman who surrendered him had a major substance issue, he had Mange, Mites, Upper Resp Infection, Cherry Eye, Cysts in all his paws, raw skin everywhere oozying from laying in his own feces. (cause he was LOCKED in a closet for most of his life, 30 lbs overweight he couldnt even walk he was sooo heavy. His collar was fused to his neck. IT WAS VERY costly. He is Healthy and active now, and love his life on a farm. The odd ball that he is with all the "real" farm dogs, he does just fine. Despite popular belief of English Bullies are Dum-Dums.. they are actually VERY VERY bright! This little monster picks up things faster than our working bred dogs do by far. Be ready for your heart to break when you hear/see what these poor babies go through when you rescue. Sometimes its pretty bad. Cost us over 5k in vet bills to get him back to normal. Very sad, but one of the best things we ever did. He brings more joy than we could have ever imagined to our lives. GOODLUCK, and IDK where you are located but I have a friend that works very closely with a Rescue in the South PM me if you are interested in info! :)

As far as the farting, feeding a high quality food will help A LOT. We have a dog that used to have BAD gas. We started feeding her Blue Buffalo wilderness food and she rarely farts now. Basically, any food that uses real meat and no grains will help with the gas issue.

I have one and love him to death. His name is Rogie and he will be 3 in July. They have really big personalities and love their humans. Mine is very sweet and is actually intimidated by other dogs. There is a Yorkie in the condo area where I that I say "bullies" (by barking) at my bulldog. I have never been a "dog person" and hated dog hair (I grew up with dogs as my parents always had them). My bulldog now sleeps under the covers with me when it's cold! My bully is on an organic dog food with fish in it and it keeps his coat nice and he really has a lot less flatulence since he's been on it (I also had him on the Royal Canine food for a while). He does get the occasional toe cyst, but not often. I don't have trouble keeping his folds clean, but his ears (one in paticular) and tail pocket (for ones that have a curly tail) get really dirty if I don't clean at least every other day. When it's not too hot he goes to the barn or the barrel races with me. He always knows when he gets home he gets a bath and runs straight to the bathtub to be cleaned. At the races I have resorted to bathing him in the shower in the trailer because once he gets home he is too tired to get up after a long day at the race. He sleeps 90% of the day (mostly on the bed snuggled in the pillows), but he does like to play - mostly "tuggie" games and he can sort of fetch. I want a herd of bulldogs, but my husband says I can't get any more until we get a bigger bed and a bigger house. LOL.
Here are some pictures of him, they are all over my FB.

This was after he got his bath. He had a robe (before he outgrew it) that he would wear while drying. He also LOVES the heater when it's cold.

He loves his pillows!

Ok, last one. This was my Christmas card from the year before last.

We have An olde at 70 lb. We love her and her breeder is well known in "the olde community" she is awesome and her dogs have the best temper. The olde don't have health issues in the way that the standard does but has more big dog health issues, just with any dog. She is my little couch surfer, hangs out all day in bed or couch or yard.

My sister has a male & a female.  The female is getting ready to have puppies & hasn't had a lot of issues but her male, Hudson, has had one issue after the other.  He has an inverted tail & it has to be cleaned constantly or it will get infected & stink, has bladder/kidney stones & has had 3 surgeries & will probably need more in the future, hip issues, allergies to grass you name it he has it.  They ended up getting him fixed because they didn't want to pass all this down to any puppies.  They are cute but he's spent over $7,500 on vet bills alone.  He also had to get his eye lids fixed.
