| So my spring fever set it yesterday. Went to buy dog/cat food at TSC yesterday. Came home with 6 little batam chicks. Ha ha, I planned on ordering some, americuanas and reds also. But they were just too cute to pass up since I planned on buying some anyways. =) anyone else have chickens, and not for their kids easter presents? LOL I'd love to see pictures of your batams if you have any. I have one silkie in the bunch that I can tell ( black beak tip right? ) but the rest, I'm unsure of what breed they'll be.

Location: up to my waist in you know what | I just like you got suckered into a few baby bantams too. Lol. We were wanting a few more chicks to go with our 6 laying hens and of course they were to cute to pass up at TSC. We got 2 yellows and 4 blacks, they are about 9 weeks old now. I love their little "chaps", sooo cute!!! These are our first bantams, we already have 2 adult reds, 3 whites and a black giant. I would post pics but I can never do it from my phone.
ETA I think I finally outsmarted my phone! Yay me! Sorry it's not the best pic.

They ARE cute though! I have plenty of grown chickens though, so I just remind myself that the cute little fluffy chicks grow up to be not-so-cute chickens haha. |

I want a Frizzle!!! But I can't find any around me. So far I have Swedish Flower, Salmon Favarolle and Ameracauna's. Unfortunately I had an issue with some racoons and I lost all my Rhode Island Reds and Sussex chickens. We are in the process of building a new coop that will be the equivalent of Fort Knox....I want to name it Fowlcatraz. |

I imagine we will have coyotes... lol dad doesn't know yet. But I'm going to be getting a peraneese( sp? ) pup. Also, a goat. I'm redoing a dog pen for when they're old enough to go outside. wrapping it in chicken wire, covering the top witha weather top, building high perch posts and nesting boxes for the top all the way around.
I was told goats are good with chickens because not much will mess with them. I was also told if you put crushed red pepper around the perimeter of the coops it keeps snakes, rats, possums and coyotes out. The snakes dont like it on their skin, and the rest have sensitive noses. |

Yea heat lamp is a must. Or a heating pad covered with towl. They don't produce enough body heat to live without one. I love my chicks. LOL but they'll be staying inside until completely feather... boy they stink. LOL I sleep with my windows wide open, and my door with the screen closed!!
And I clean their box every two days, plus change it once a week. Little boogers are spoiled rotten. |

These chicks didn't look very good to me when we got them home. Bummer though I was super sad this morning. To be safe I'm bringing in my ducklings tonight into my mud room in their crate. Supposed to be lower 30's tonight and windy. |

...................................................Just playing. YES, I have a Roo. A big, mean Buff Orphington who chases our daughter and eats the dogs food as they (mastiffs) watch from a safe distance. We ended up hatching 3 babies. One was never "right" and passed. But the other two are fat and fluffy. Day 6 into a second incubation. Crossed fingers for a better hatch rate. LOVE little baby chicks. |

LOL, love and its always fun when we can joke around with it other. Boy that Rooster must be one heck of a bada** to take over the dogs food. But then again my hens rule the roost out here too, all the cats and dogs give them space and let them have their food if the Hens like. I have no rooster for that reason of being mean when it comes to kido's. Goodluck on your chicks hatching, I love watching they are so dang cute. So fingers crossed

We would have the same problem except for no wolves but we would have the racoons going bonkers over them. I still want to build a "Fort Knox"(TM-GraciousLegacy) coop and see how it goes. Heck, I have to worry that my kitties don't go too far from the barn/shop, it's WILD out here! I would love ducks for our tank but that would truly end in disaster. The coyotes are sooo thick this year. |

We have coons, coyotes, foxes, eagles and a lot of hawks and so far in the 4yrs we have had chickens, we haven't lost one to a wild critter. Mostly the horse water tank. If it isn't tip top full they fall in getting a drink. They always have water in their coop too :( We also religiously lock them up every night right at dark and if we are going to be gone, they can only go from the coop to their chicken wire pen. It also has a wire roof. |

| Ive been soooo good this year. Until Saturday. Went to the local chicken sale and bought 2 production red hens that are laying and 8 silver laced Wyandotte chicks. Then went to TSC yesterday and they had specialty lakenvelders. There were only 3 left and they twisted my arm to buy 3 brahmas so I met the minimum number. I lost 1 of the wyandottes last night. But the other 13 are doing great. Hopefully their not all roo's!!!!!! I love chickens. Before we moved we had around 30 ducks and chickens. My heelers are leaving them alone too! |

Finished the coop last week. It's alittle redneck, but it'll work. Going to put some next boxes and roosting perches in it eventually. For now they have a 'roosting pallet' LOL
