So just an idea i'm throwing around... give me the good, bad, and the ugly about putting on a barrel race. i'm talking pretty low key probably 30-50 entries. best ideas for possibly getting some added money. Do you honestly think after all of the work and money you put into it, is it worth the profit? I would have plenty of help working and running it so that isn't a major concern although i know a lot goes into every part of it. there is a covered/lighted arena close by that runs off of memberships (pay $150 for your whole family for the year and you can reserve the arena any time you want to ride) so i could most likely have it there for a decent price for the day to boost memberships. anyway, please nobody be rude i'm just asking for honest opinions for an idea i'm tossing around.

If your doing it to make money, you're not going too..... You'll be lucky to break even after all the money that will go into it for the arena, tractor, fuel, timer, PA system, insurance, banners/wraps if you choose, awards-again if you choose, office supplies(paper, pens, computer, printer), the list of expenses can be long. With that being said, any money that you do make will come from your exhibitions. To get sponsors for added money you need to write up a proposal of what they are going to gain by sponsoring your series/race/etc. You also better have a thick skin, someone always has an opinion.

I very much appreciate having barrel races to go to, and I am very thankful for all the producers. But no way would i ever put on a race. I would help if a friend gave me a very specific job, but im not a planner, I dont do well with stress, and i really dont know how to handle unhappy people i shut right down.
I watched one event i helped at have a man come up and have a Nancy fit he did not like the ally way, the producer graciously calmed him and fixed his issue, by changing a bunch of pannels around, I would have went to my truck locked the doors and cried after being spoken to that way.
I could not do it, no way.

My friends and I put runs on for a few years.  No one wanted to lift a finger to help, constantly crabbed about everything and the insurance cost a fortune.  Sadly it takes a couple bad people to ruin it for lots of good people.

That's very true, it takes only one bad to erase a lot of good.

I was just trying to say high five to all thoes that do put on events. You all rock!

I love to put on barrel races, but be prepared to have a few negative Nancy's! There will always be those few that could do it better, but have never done one nor will they offer to help you out! If you do have one, set your rules and stick by them do not change them during the show., if you need to change it do it for the next show! If you say you are going to start the show at a certain time, besure and start at that time or very close to it, NOT an hour later!
You are not going to get rich or make your mortgage payments! Lol people like to complain that there are no local shows to haul too, but they forget they are usually the ones that will not help and only complain!
Good luck

We put on a number of barrel races at our place and, for the most part, enjoy it.  It is a lot of work and we are just 100 feet from our house.  Hauling everything to another facility might make me rethink it.  To reiterate what the previous posters have said:  you won't make any big money.  You might make enough to take your help out for burgers afterward, but that's about it.  However, I've made wonderful friendships from our barrel races.  There have been a couple grumps, but in general everyone knows they are grumps and once I figured that out and quit caring what they said/did, it all was fine.  Sometimes you have to make tough decisions, but if you're fair and consistent, people seem to understand.  I'd say go for it!  I'd like to have a few more places run myself :

Not much advice sorry, but we have the perfect facilities on our property but just wondering what you have to have for insurance. I've heard no matter how much insurance you have you could still get sued big time since its on your own property, although we'd love to do it, it's not worth the risk imo
