Location: North Dakota | I have a BIG gelding and of course I live exactly 3 miles from a certified scale so I thought I should use this formula I found to tell me how much my horse weighs (why hook up the trailer and go weigh him??)
I used this method:

OK, my measurements could be 4-6 inches off right??
What I got was 81 heartgirth and 84 length
equals out to 1670 pounds!!!!!!!!
But even if I'm 6 inches off he's still 1329 pounds!
He's big yes, and the biggest horse I've ever rode but really he needs a tube and a half of dewormer??
So those of you that have scaled your horses will you measure them and let me know your measurements?? |

Location: North Dakota | My Point is, if you KNOW what the weight of your horse is, can you measure his heartgirth and his length? This guy is the deepest chested I've every had he's 81 inches around! My other mostly normal 15 hand (I think weigh maybe 1200 Pounds) are only 75 inches around! I will look and see if I have a recent pic. |

| My guy is a solid 15.2 so not huge height wise, but is BIG and WIDE. Even his legs and bone structure is huge. He weighed right under 1300 on the scale at the vet a little bit ago, probably a solid 1300 when he is muscled up and in shape. I can't imagine a 1600lb QH! |

| My horse weighes 1215lb and that is when he was not in shape as he had epm, weighed him on vet scale. He is a little over 16 hands and pretty thick. Looks like a warm blood. I think when he is fat and in shape he would be more like 1300/1350. But funmy thing is my 15hand powerhouse mare wears same side girth.

| This is a BIG horse --- like 16-1. I am 5' 5". He is also very thick. I seriously doubt that he weighs over 1250.

I have a weight tape and it says my big 16hand guy weighs under 1000 pounds...I dunno about that LOL!! While he isn't quite as wide as some of my fiance's roping horses, he definitely isn't narrow. I haven't ever hauled him accross the scales though, maybe I'll try to do that soon.

One of the reasons this came up is because I have been guessing all this time and this horse usually looks wormy long before the rest of the crew. Maybe this is part of the problem with drug resistant parasites. There is a dosage for weight for a reason. |

1290 sounds right. My big horses all hang out at that zone whenever they get on a vets scale, except my 15 hand mare, she's more like 1080-1100.
Sounds like a lot of trouble to go through when you could just have a quick trip and hello to the vet if you're that concerned about a weight. |

This is my point, it "sounds right" Honestly, I will get my horse to the scale soon, but curiosity has me wondering. If you know for a fact WHAT your horse weighs, will you measure the horse and report back?? Just like height there is a lot of guessing that happens in the horse world. Want to know why I haven't posted his height? I'm not absolutely certain. I am 5'4" and I cannot look over him, his wither hits me at my forehead or higher. So, I'm GUESSING hes right at 16 hands. |

I used the weight tape on my paint. It said he weighed 1130. I do think he does weigh a little more than that but not any 1300 or 1400 pounds. By the way, he has a huge barrel so the weight tape has a lot of horse to circle. |

Anyhow, I will measure mine this weekend because I do have legit bigger size horses and I do weigh them every time I go to the vet, just my OCD to keep track of those things.
I have one that is almost 16 hands and weighs 1285. One near the same height but lanky- weighed 1125 last year and 1235 this year- we fight to keep weight on him. Then I have a STOUT rope horse that is a little over 15.1 that weighs 1350.
I have a pic I can share of a colt we took to the vet and weighed- he was right at 14.2 and he weighed 1100# exactly.
I will let you know.

Thanks! I KNOW my Max is taller than Red and will make a 84" blanket look just about right, I would have guessed Red at the 1250-1300 pound range just from standing next to him. I really wish I didn't have to work, he'd be in the trailer headed to the truck stop scale now! BUT it is a fun game to play, and on a serious note, I DO think people tell fibs all the time. I could tell you I weigh 175 however, that is a LIE And I won't tell you the true number either. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | This is my late stud. He was very big boned, good feet and thick chested and butt. When he was in shape to compete I rode him to the scales and led him across. He weighted 1347# so we guessed 1300# without the tack. I imagine he would have been around 1220-1250 later in life as just a pasture breeding stallion. I have no idea what his girth was, but he cinched really deep.

AND if my 36" cinch is a true issue....tell me from the pic on page 1 is it too long?? Mind you I no longer have the saddleright pad and have gone to a much thicker CSI on this horse, but really, does it seem like I have a cinch that is too long??? |

I always go the high side but I was going really high with the mini at 500 and so I lowered his. This is a very interesting topic! |

This gelding weighed 1500lbs ON A SCALE when he was being ridden regularly. (So he wasn't as fat as he is in this pic.) He is 16 hands. I'm having trouble finding better pictures.) The black filly on the right is a 2yo bucking horse filly. So she really isn't as little as he makes her look.

Most people are worse about being able to guess weight than they are height! Most peoples horses are shorter than they think and weigh MORE. (I'm talking about people that "guestimate" and don't MEASURE and weigh.)
This gelding weighed 1500lbs ON A SCALE when he was being ridden regularly. (So he wasn't as fat as he is in this pic.) He is 16 hands. I'm having trouble finding better pictures.) The black filly on the right is a 2yo bucking horse filly. So she really isn't as little as he makes her look.
That is a massive boy! Y'all have me dying to know the real weights on both of my 16.3 geldings. (They have been height measured!) I've always guessed one at 1200 and one at 1100 but now I'm thinking that's not right after seeing some of these pics. |
