| They are doing fantastic. They have grown so much in a short time. I have no idea how she had the room, but they all made it. Thanks to Robyn. She came to our barn at 3:30 am and helped me. They are just adorable. And yes the dam is a daughter of Dash for Perks.

I know a mare too that had healthy twins(filly/colt), they both grew up to be just fine although they never broke the filly to ride because her one leg was a little twisted. |

Also, did you know it was twins from the beginning?

They both will appear to be doing fine for a few weeks then one, sometimes, will just die. Most of the time when horses have twins, one of them will have issues internally with organs that aren't detected right away. Some do survive and are just fine... considering the breeding on these two, I really hope they both are strong and healthy! |

| Yes we had her checked. 1st for pregnancy and then for heartbeat. Only an idiot would want to leave twins and I assure you we are not idiots. Our vet missed it. Unfortunate but it does happen. I am glad that you have had twins before and can share your helpful advice. They were born on Good Friday and have had numerous vet exams. Hopefully we will miss losing one as you did. Please keep them both in your prayers. As of today they are running around in a small trap with a stall attached. I will post some new pics when I can today. Thank you all for your kind thoughts and remarks. Most have viewed this as the miracle it is and not as our screw up. We are not new to breeding or foaling. But I will say I hope to never have twins again!! Lol lots of work and sleepless nights worrying over them.

I haven't had my own twins, but am an RVT and have witnessed this many times over from clients. Glad they are doing good and, like I said, I for sure hope they both make it. I wasn't trying to be a debbie downer, just wanted to let you know the risk is still there.

I am finding this interesting. I was one of those "not informed" first time breeders about 8 years ago that didn't go for a recheck. Never knew you should and my vet even though he did the AI just didn't have you come back...............but I still love him. However, we had a single birth. Believe me, we check now.
Did you find out early? Or upon delivery? Please share how you found out. Lots of info can be learned from what you did and didn't do at the birth.
I guess maybe if you didn't know it was like having a baby in the 1950's, no one knew it was twins. Surprise!

| We found out on delivery. We have all our broodmares under cameras. We have our vets check for pregnancy at 14 days and heartbeat at 26-30 days. when they were born we gave them IGG and plasma, also probiotics. We milked the mare and made sure they each got colostrum. We stimulated them by aggressively rubbing with towels. We also assisted them to stand as the mom was kinda in shock and had to be given banamine to ease her. They were born at 2:25am and the vet got here around 9:30am to check. We are very fortunate that everything went just right. Could have been a train wreck in so many ways. God is good |

| Having seen one born on the cameras, I thought hey we are good. We raced to barn and got there just in time to see the 2nd one born !! My daughter (Simply Firewater on the board) was out of town. I panicked and just started doing what we normally do to help one. I called my daughter and asked for help. She called Robyn Herring who lives about 25 miles from us and she came to the rescue. Now that is a true friend, arriving at 3:30am to chaos, and just pitched in and we got it done. My heart sank a few times that night, but now when I look at the 3 of them, I just smile and say Thank you God ! |

He thought she was prolapsing when she was having the second filly. He never expected it to be another foal! Both survived, not sure where they are now. The little one was pretty little and the last time I saw her she was about 13.2 as a 2 yo. Congrats on your twins! |

| A friend of mine's good mare had twins last year. One was really big and one was really small. The big one we tube fed and slept around the clock in the stall but she didnt make it. They believe her organs were not fully developed. The other one, is beautiful but small. She probably wont exceed Quarter Pony height.
This thread made my day though. What good lookin babies with some fantastic bloodlines! Please keep posting on this journey!

I would think that at the very early stages it would appear as 1 foal. Identical the egg splits. I doubt you could abort 1 of identical either. . . as they share the plecenta, so choices would only have been to abort both or go with it. God knew they were perfect, so he didn't tell anyone :) What an amazing blessing!!!!! This is soooooooo cool.
as I understand it, identical in animals is different because the color genes are last and are affected by many external influences...position, temp stuff like that.

Yes, it would have had to be a neither or both choice. The genes are the same, the expression is slightly different, so that's why they don't look exactly the same.
Congrats on healthy twins!!! You have an extreme rarity with them both being good size AND healthy! I hope they continue to do well. You have been doubly blessed!

We are blessed they were normal and that Mom made it too. I am trying to get my daughter to post some new pics, when we can get them taken. They are really filling out. Still don't know what color they will be. But whatever they are loved.
Yes. they truly are a miracle. So thrilled to hear they are doing well |

| I am not the best at pictures or posting them, but here are the few I could get today. Little guys would not cooperate with me. Ran under mama and around her. They are not usually camera shy. Plus the light was not good. But the last one shows the one I think may be buckskin? He has a line on his back. But they probably will both turn gray. Who knows at this point. Thanks again for the support for these little guys. |

I love the Thomas and Mac names but in case you are still looking:
Firewater on the left and Firewater on the Right (the picture of them laying down made me think of right and left.)
OR Firewater to the Left and Firewater to Right. |

This coming from the one that after her kid said the dappled Palomino looked like a Jaguar, I named her jag. And Jag's foal came out black so his name was Panther. It didn't quite fit him when he shed out to a blue roan but oh well lol.

| I will try and add the newest photos we have. PLEASE keep in mind that we have had a lot of mud and cold and they are not in slicked off, perfect photo op shape. They are just babies. And we love them. They are as big as our yearlings and can find nothing wrong with them. Again God blessed us with their momma and them. Bear with me while I try and remember how to upload photos. I don't post much anymore, just lurk and keep up with gossip ! :) |

| Please excuse the pink halter, they are both boys. The gray was the first one born and brown/black was the 2nd one. We call them Beau and Luke. Thank you for wanting to see them. They have flourished and become just like any other baby we own. When spring comes and we take our new pictures for the yearlings sale book we will post new pictures. |

| We have them for sale, but it will be really hard to let these two go. I was there for their first breath and fought to keep them going. It will have to be an outstanding home before they leave !! And yes we are breeding back to FWOTR. Happy is our man ! Had nothing to do with him that we had twins. |

| I'm just so curious, how did this work? Did you get papers on the second foal? What kind of paperwork for AQHA had to be done? Did you have to pay a second stud fee?
Sorry if you've answered these before, this is just so uncommon that curiousity is killing me. haha |

I knew she said they were able to be registered, just wondering if they had been yet. I wasn't able to find the answer to the other two questions, so if they were answered, could you point me to the page cause I must've overlooked them? |

| Yes we are registering the babies, and yes it means another stud fee. The only hitch is AQHA. They want real photos, not digital because they were born on same day. But they will be registered. The dam handled this like a trooper. She did go into shock after the 2nd baby was born. Had to be hard on her for sure. But once we got her over that and gave her a little banamine, she recovered quickly and never faltered feeding two. She never refused one or was confused about there being two. One would nurse on one side and the other one on the opposite side. We upped her feed and supplement. She is just one heck of a good mare. She was injured early in her barrel racing career, but we chose to breed her and are very satisfied. She is by Dash for Perks. We are breeding her back to FWOTR and will monitor her very closely for twins. They were missed before on several ultrasounds, but this time, we will be ready. They do have different personalities and different builds. I credit my daughter (Simply Firewater) and her feeding program for the way they have grown and flourished. Everytime I look at them, I just shake my head. We are so blessed to have them normal and the mare able to breed again. Thank you all again for your interest in them. It has been a journey, but one I don't want to travel again !! |
