I can't speak for the other states, but Texas has received lots of rain in the past 6 months and it's starting to show. Snakes are every where! We have seen and killed at least 6 snakes already. We have seen them in our barn, by our dog pens and out in the pastures. This picture was taken this morning by our hay barn... (I do believe I had a minor heart attack
Long story short - keep your eyes open and be careful! It will be hot before long and they won't be nearly as easy to see...

Are those water moccasins or just king looking snakes. My dogs are already carrying snake around the yard I hope they don't meet up up those water moccasins. So far they manage the water/garden snakes.

We think they are water moccasins, then again we aren't snake experts. Lol
Around us we usually see chicken snakes, rattle snakes and water moccasins. They all scare the crap out of me, no matter what kind they are! Lol

Looks like western rat snakes.. We just relocate the rat snakes, and kill the venomous ones. Last year this time I had a dang rattle snake in my laundry room, talk about heart attack!!

These look like the Blue Indigo's I love having these around my place, they are harmless and they eat the bad snakes, so I know I will have less of the bad snakes when I see the Indigos.

I hate water moccasins, they are mean and they will chase you. Any snake scares the heck out of me, though. Have any of you noticed the rattlers are not rattling much anymore? We got an influx of wild pigs and have noticed lately that the snakes are not rattling a warning anymore. So now I am really watchful.

We were just talking about this a few days ago. You use to could hear them way before you were standing on top of them, not so much anymore.
I can already see myself sporting my snake boots until November, no flip flops for me!

SouthTX you may be right, we aren't real educated in the snake department. If they are harmless, your more than welcome to come get ALL of them! Lol

we get a lot of chicken snakes. The water snakes are the worst around here. But only on the river ways and creeks mostly.

Last time I went tubeing.. saw 7 water moccassins an a cotton mouth. I usually just move to the opposite side of the river, and they'll swim downstream opposite me until they find standing reeds or something. Was avoiding one once, and came within a foot of a VERY curious cotton mouth sunning on a rock just outside the water...

I pretty much walked on water for the next 5 mins. Lets just say I wont be tubeing that river anymore, canoeing is where it is at.. big sticks to protect yourself. It's unnerving to be on their level and KNOW they're faster than you.

Oh I have plenty of snakes out here, just hate it when a Copperhead or a Rattlesnake comes up in the yard, thats why I like having the Indigos and Kingsnakes around. I have chickens and they will kill the baby copperheads and rattlesnakes if they see them.

SouthTX, I wish we could have chickens, but unfortunately curr dogs think they are fun to pluck and eat.  Our barn/yard cats have been carrying around baby snakes, I'm just scared a big snake will eat them...

Longneck and M, I honestly don't know how I was able to stand there and take the picture. When I walked around the barn, I was screaming like someone was killing me. You better believe after seeing that this morning, I haven't looked up from the ground once! Lol

If you take crushed red pepper and put it around the perimeter of the chicken coop it keeps snakes, coyotes and foxes++ out. just redo it every month

I thought I had tried everything, but I didn't try red pepper flakes....  Moth balls, golf balls, snake granuals... nothing helped!  Someone told me to put a hook into an egg and hang it from the ceiling and it would catch the snake.... umm... last thing I want to do is have a p!$$ed off snake hanging from my coop!!!!!!!!!

Good luck, Equal... we've been getting so much rain (heck, it's pouring right now and has been for 6-7 hours) I know it's probably just a matter of time.

I...would....DIE! I was mowing the other day and hit a piece of carpet someone had buried or something, and when I reached to pull it out a little snake fell out! Husband was at work, so I called my dad to come pull it out... Too many copperheads found in our area for me to just grab it!

Same is going on in S. Arizona.  We're driving over rattle snakes like speed bumps.  My husband called me yesterday freaking out because one was long enough to stretch across one lane on a private road.  (about six feet or so)  it's going to be a bad year.

I've actually seen a ball of snakes like that in the water... lets just say I plum cleared out.  pretty sure I did grow wings at that point. And that scene gets me too!

Funny thing, snakes dont bother me unless they're venomous. Water snakes scare me to death though. Had one crawl up in a boat after me once... LOL and I'm going to school to be a zoologist. Lets just say I'm gonna work with the furry creatures. NOT the reptiles.

Most water snakes are EXTREMELY aggressive. and have been known to chase people, climb in boats, ect..

If they're around water at my house, they did. We frog gig a lot, and we kill a bunch of babies. Thank god for thigh high rubber boots!

They terrify me too.  I cautiously enter the hay barn every time.  I am putting in a garden and I keep telling the kids to be extremely careful.   Its un-nerving but you kind of get used to being on guard.

They had triangular heads and were fat snakes! Guess they've been eating good

Triangle heads and short fat tails - water mocassions.  An easy way for a person to tell if they are posionious is to look at your thumb.  If the head looks like you thumb not posionious.  Put your pointer finger and thumbs together both hands and it will be the triangle.

Oh my gosh! I'd wet myself if I saw a cluster of snakes at my barn like that!
I was JUST getting ready to go outside and do my Barn chores before I read this (I'm a SAHM.) and now I'm Remembering that our pitchfork broke last summer and hubby has yet to get me another. So uh...nope. I'll just wait til hubby is home from work.
The first summer we lived at our house was 2013...the fields and yard were SO unkept. The people who lived here before us didn't believe in mowing or weed eating bc it puts emissions in the air...ugh. So we got a great deal bc the land was such a mess. But you can imagine the SNAKES! We saw multiple 5 plus foot king snakes, at least 5 adult copper heads and too many babies to count. I almost grabbed a black snake once while pulling apart hay in the barn. Stepped on a baby copper head, didn't realize what it was in time to crush it (I had boots on). Not to mention...snakes on our front porch, in our garage, my husband caught 3 babies in traps in the basement, and oh...a baby copperhead IN MY KITCHEN! Needless to say I was late for work that day and was sitting on my counter screaming. Sad that the people didn't take care of things, we have a cute little place. We still have snakes of course but not NEAR as bad now that we've cleaned things up. Ugh

Cottonmouth and water moccasin are two names for the same snake, lol. I don't mind snakes, but, yeah, I definitely wouldn't want to be in the water with them!
I'm glad I saw this post, it's a good reminder to watch where I'm walking and wear my boots.

equal ranch & south pony girl - same here at our house we kill 7 or 8 rattlesnakes every year in the areas that we keep mowed. Always on the look out for snakes since they are so plentiful and keep several hoes at different spots all on the property. Several years ago I had killed 4 in one week and had to take a stress test, they kept telling me to look at the picture on the wall not the ground in front of me and had to tell me several different times, finally she said please mam just look up I am sure you don't walk around looking down all the time. I said actually I DO !!

Tonight I went our to collect the eggs and there was rat snake where the eggs should be.  I guess I got mad because I had in my hand a smallish stainless steel mixing bowl that had been in the chilcken cage.  Must have fed them some leftover in it.  I attacked the snake with it.  He was only about 4 feet long, but he got mad, but I got madder.  I don't know if he survived or not because he started really striking so I left him.  Hope he won't come back, he got all my eggs!

jbw tx mom - 2015-04-13 4:48 PM equal ranch & south pony girl - same here at our house we kill 7 or 8 rattlesnakes every year in the areas that we keep mowed.

LOL!!!! I will definitely see those little boogers before they see me.

americanpride08 - 2015-04-13 12:57 PM we get a lot of chicken snakes.

Cottonmouth and water moccasin are two names for the same snake, lol. I don't mind snakes, but, yeah, I definitely wouldn't want to be in the water with them! I'm glad I saw this post, it's a good reminder to watch where I'm walking and wear my boots.

Huh I didn't notice I put cotton mouth. I meant copper head. Big brown suckers. They're mean lookin too. I swear rattlers and other venomous snakes just look mean to me. Boas don't look nearly that terrifying

I am ready! I already have my shovels strategically placed at the barn! Although I have killed them with hammers, fence posts, barrels and just about whatever is convenient! Also remember if you see a full grown copperhead there is probably a mate close by.

Yes, they are really out due to all the rain right now.  My good horse was bitten 3 weeks ago. We guess it was while he was out in the pasture.  Terrible swelling & lameness.  The actual bite area blew out & then rotted the tissue around it.  He is recovering & will be OK, but I sure do hate that he had to go through that.  I HATE snakes...all of them.

The snake handlers go out about a month before and catch the rattlesnakes. As well as other non snake handlers that want to turn in a snake for the biggest snake prize. They are kept in an exhibit for the public until the day of the rodeo. The day of the rodeo they use them for different educational and entertainment purposes. Everything is 100% humane incase you wondered. The rodeo has nothing to do with a rodeo. That's just what they started calling it 55yrs ago. It's more like a flea market or feastavle. Different venders set up to sell there goods. It's Saturday and Sunday. Both nights have concerns. This year they had Gary Allen Saturday and the Newsboys(singers of Gods Not Dead) Sunday. It's clean family fun the 2nd weekend of April every year. http://www.opprattlesnakerodeo.com

Cool. Thanks for explaining. So what do they do with all the snakes afterward? That would be scary if they just released them all in one location...eek!

I giggled about the part that it's humane. I'm terrified and would be like 'kill them! Kill them all!' I guess PETA wouldn't be very impressed with me ;)

Some are released far far away from people. The rest are sent to drug labs where they use them for there venom to make anti-venom. There are several animal rights groups been trying to shut it down for years. They claim the Eastern Diamondback are becomeing extinct and that they are a critical part of the food chain.

The ones I have seen they do kill them and cook the meat and make things out of the skin. But it is humane, they get heads chopped off instantly. There are a ton of youtube videos on rattlesnake round ups

I'm more worried about the crazy animal rights people that 'release their pets' into the wild and they've been breeding with native snakes. In Florida, some crazy nuttos let some 'pets' loose and they started interspecies breeding with native snakes. They also started eating a lot of the good snakes. They're a serious threat. Imagine if someone has a 'pet' rattler from another region of the world, releases it and it breeds with one of our natives... they would be deadly creature. -shiver-

Personally I can live without the poisonous ones, but they are important to the ecosystems.  I however believe heavily in population control. =P

We live about 20 miles from Sweetwater TX which host the Worlds Largest Rattlesnake Roundup, at Sweetwater they do kill and skin and fry up the meat - taste like chicken - they tell me, I have not tried it. They also milk the snakes for venom and a host of other activities. Its a huge income for the town and county and animal right activist have gotten worse every year and are now trying to get a law passed so the snake hunters cant use gas to empty the snake dens. They host the roundup in the county coliseum which hold multiple horse events year around. The smell is still lingering from the snakes for weeks and we see a lot of horses reacting to that for several weeks after they have the roundup.

We found a bull snake inside the TV cabinet a few months ago.  I guess he was planning to winter there.  It was quite the adeventure to get him out.....  I was so glad my SO was there to handle that....

I have no idea how he even got inside the house, as everything is always closed due to an indoor cat.

At this time I wish all Rattlesnakes in the world, dead.  Last Tuesday evening, my Grandsons pony got bit on the side of the face, just above his nose.  Tattoo has been at the vet since last Wednesday morning.  In all of my 62 years, I have never seen a Rattlesnake bite.  When I found him, he was bleeding from both eyes, his nose and mouth.  His head and throat were so swollen he had his teeth hooked on the roundpen fence to keep his mouth open.
When we got to the vet, they had to put a trach in him.  As of today, they have taken the trach and the catheter out, but had to put a catheter back in this morning because his lips are still so swollen he cannot purse them together to drink enough water.
The vet said that had Tattoo been a big horse, he would have probably been home already.  But, due to his size and the size of the snakebite, he is having a much harder time.  He is only 49 inches tall and weighs about 800-850 lbs.  They are saying that when the swelling goes down, the fang marks will be about an inch apart.
With all the rain we have had, they are looking for higher and dryer ground.  We 12 miles Southeast of San Antonio, TX.  Needless to say, we have not found the snake.

Dudette - 2015-04-14 2:07 PM At this time I wish all Rattlesnakes in the world, dead.

Oh my - prayers for the little guy!

prayers for sure! The good news is, once he over comes this. If he ever gets bit again, his body will have a much stronger immunity to it. Though that is definately scary!

Oh my goodness! That's scary! Prayers for the little guy, I'm glad he is doing better though!

On that note, many day working cowboys around here are carrying venom extraction kits, incase themselves or their horses get bit. It's a life saving investment for about $5-10.

I just pulled a four footer out of a guys car here where I work about an hour ago.
Non venomous so I turned it loose in the field across the street. But the poor guy who saw him in his car was not happy. LOL
