But his maiden momma is terrified of him! He was born Saturday morning. She wants absolutely nothing to do with him...
I have tried everything that I know to get her to take to him.
We are bottle feeding the baby. I have been milking momma as much as possible, giving him her milk. He is also on Foal Lac milk re-placer and is getting 2cc of penicillin for the first 5 days per vet.
Saturday night we fought a battle with colic with him and he pulled through it!
For my kids sake I hope he is one tough little dude! They are so in love with him already. Poor foal thinks he is a person/dog.

I have no advice for horses. We used dogs on our cattle with maiden mommas tho. We put the cow/calf pair in a stock bumper pull trailer and put one of our family friend's calahoula cow dogs in the stock trailer with them as well. Every time the cow kicked or bit the calf the dog was trained to nip at the momma cow on her hock if she kicked and her nose if she bit. After a few minutes she learned to protect the calf and herself by accepting the calf. A few hours later they were all let out into a pen for the next three days. After those three days they returned to the normal cattle herd. I loved picking up those dogs for my dad from his friend. It meant I didn't have a bottle calf LOL Less work for me!!

Has she been by herself with this baby yet? Has she had the opportunity to lick Clean nuzzle the foal some new mothers as well as most need alone time. Perhaps tie up blindfold and hobble a back leg and let that foal nurse so that bag gets emptied she just might let that baby nurse.
