| I took a gamble and paid a pretty penny for 2 colts.. I'm not big into colts but like i said i took a gamble. both paid in full to FF and both broke and riding about pretty decent. I'm ready to send them off to the trainers for a couple months to get started, CORRECTLY. So my question is, how do you decide who to send your babies too? i know everyone has a different option. So i will give you my presences on who i have around my area.
1. Terri Alexander
2. Blake Monroe
4. Carl wise
4. Steve Mcdonald
i know each of these trainers is very talented in there own way and all have every different styles. I've talked to each of them and they all have openings in the next week or two. So i have a while to think on it. i would love everyones personal thoughts about each trainer and other trainers they like. I'm training to do as much "home work" as i can. |

| Questions to ask yourself:
1. Can you follow the trainers style?
2. Will they feed your horse?
3. Will they treat your horse fairly?
4. Will they take your horse to the vet for problems/injury/illness?
5. Will they communicate changes in your horse to you, no matter how minute?
6. Will they actually ride your horse?
7. Do they have good references you know personally and can speak to? |

| not to much different in cost. Cost isn't a huge issue as long as I'm getting what I'm paying for

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I've only heard of the first 2. My first action would be to see who rides/trains themselves. Most big name trainers actually have someone else do a lot of the work and they supervise and fine tune. If I am paying what those trainers charge, I want the TOP DOG on them themselves. I would also want to know how many horses are in the barn (often high numbers answer my question above). Those are just a couple things that come to mind. I don't know the ins/outs of her program, but if I could I think I would send one to Halle Melvin Hanssen. Especially if it was a FG bred horse. |

| Terri. I love the way she rides and like what comes out of her barn. Ive ridden behind Blake and Brett and while I can ride them, I dont LOVE them. Havent ridden anything from the Wises or McDonalds.
I think it comes down to what you like in a horse. Do you want a horse to ride simple. (Forward, back, stop...etc) or do you like more handle. (Yeilding hindquarters, softness through shoulder, light in that face...etc)

| Sent mine to Liana DeWeese and I am very happy at this point and excited about my colts future!
He looks good, she gives weekly updates, some video footage....I will be sending her all of my babies in the future (which unfourtanate for my pocket book is about 8 per yr) |

This is where mine go too. She is THE BEST. PERIOD. I'm a bit biased though. My three year old is headed back to start the pattern next weekend. |

Location: DUMPING CATS AND PIGS IN TEXAS :) | I don't know them personally. I have had two horses starved. One died the next day. One had a body score of three. So, I would want lot's and lot's of pictures, videos if I couldn't see them personally. Nothing against who you listed at all. My choices would be Jessi Quarles, if she has room, Liana, I've heard good thing after good thing after good thing about her. And, I really like who I have my two with, Gunnar Enlow. All three do the work you are paying for, plus feed your horses.

Location: In The Land of Cotton | Terry hands down. I have two babies also and she is my pick.
Then Blake.
A no on the other two - which is just my opinion.
I have seen and watched all of them and she wins hands down. |

Location: DUMPING CATS AND PIGS IN TEXAS :) | Small recommendation too, make sure you have them immunized before sending them anywhere. We saw a really bad strangles case recently from two horses at a trainer's. Some don't believe in innoculation's. Protect your investment. |

Thanks LRQHS for the shout out. :) I've been fortunate to ride have some really cool horses come through the barn in the last few years! Canchasr1 has got an arsenal coming on too, so looks like she and I will be busy girls this year!
My advice to the OP would be dependent upon what your end goal is with these babies. Are your intentions to futurity them? Are you planning to sell these colts once they are going? Are you planning to keep them for yourself to run long term? The reason I ask those questions is to determine 1.) if you are planning on keeping them for yourself, you need to send them to whomever rides the most like you, will put a very strong foundation on them, and would be the easiest for you and your horses to make the transition once they come home. 2.) If your goal is to futurity these horses and or potentiall sell them, I would choose the person who has had the most success at the futurities and who gets a large % of their horses to the futurity and still working nice (without starting with 50 head and weeding it down to 4). 3.) If your goal is to sell as a futurity prospect from the trainer's barn, you'll need to choose the person who is most "in" with other trainers and owners who play the futurity game so as to get the most eyes on your colts as possible. |

| DO not send your colt to a trainer until you have either a.) ridden after them or b.) ridden with them
Each of those have a VERY different styles. The most important thing if you are wanting to ride it yourself is that you can ride after them easily. Also, make sure you discussed the bloodlines of your horses with them. Some bloodlines do not fit certain trainers and they aren't gonna say "I hate that bloodline" but if you listen you'll hear what they get along with and what they don't. |

I agree. My husband is a reining trainer and we only accept a limited number of horses in for training. Each horse gets the attention it deserves and we make an effort to call the owners and update them regularly and take LOTS of photos and videos. We always want our horses to leave our barn looking, feeling, and riding better than when it came. Shameful that some trainers starve horses half to death to achieve progress with them. |

| My plan for these babies is to rodeo on them, if i don't think they can handle it or aren't going to be as i planned i will sell them. I've talked a lot to terri and also a lot to steve. they do ONLY ride there horses (besides when sarah is home she will help out with steve) i feel like terri might be a lot easier for me to ride behind because i am not the most aggressive rider. |

This is a problem I had with a trainer as well. Apparently my money was not going toward grain, hay, shots/worming (or training!). Unfortunately they were spending it elsewhere and dealing with personal issues. Had they been up front about it I wouldn't have had a problem, but they just lied and said "everything is great!". I didn't live close so it's not like I could just drop by to check on my horse. I invested in a well known trainer, I figured they knew how to take care of a horse. It was quite a shocker when I picked my horse up. It is really surprising to hear how many trainers forget to feed or apparently have people that don't know how - or how to clean stalls. That was a whole other issue as well. |

Location: a secret | I had a very unfortunate experience with three horses I purchased and sent to a well known name in the business. I cant express how disappointed I was with his lack of try for what we invested. It is sad that I will never trust anyone with my horses again. Do your home work try to be close so you can frequently stop in. Good luck and I hope you have a great expereince if you do please share! |

Location: Texas | Blake is amazing but if you are just sending to pattern 4 months is a good time frame. Two months is barely enough time to get things going. |
