I'm trying to look at my options for birth control and want everyone's opinion on what your on and the pros and cons. I'm leaning more towards the implant that you have put in your arm but I've hard it causes weight gain.

OK.....I am going to be a little harsh here.....are you nuts? If you are even, in the least bit, thinking of "bedding" the guy that you have only known a month and have serious doubts about, you need therapy....NOT birth control!

Implanon caused MAJOR weight gain and is a pain to remove. Currently on IUD and my skin has started breaking out like a teenager and have started gaining weight again. (Been on it for about 10 months)

I'm going back to the pill. Its the only thing I didnt gain weight on.

I'm pretty against the implanon after I had it. Now have a gnarly scar on my arm from removal too.

I personally go old fashion oral (pills) method. I do 3 months in a row, so I have 4 periods a year. Less side effects IMO and I've never had any scary close calls or anything.. LOL but then, I'm pretty much been single since I was 21.

eta: the reason I use BC is because I'm irregular. The pills have always worked for me, so I never needed to look into other methods and I've heard scary things about the implant and rings.

I don't think she mentioned anything of that sort in her original post....no need to jump to that conclusion, especially saying she needs therapy...little rude there.

Best advice.. don't give your cookie up.. especially to the douche bag that is still communicating with his x. whatever form of bc you use, make his ass use a condom in addition, it has a less risk of diseases being passed . But seriously, why rush?

Thank you! People like to jump to conclusions and judge without knowing all the facts.

It's is for cramps people! I've never got them until the last few months. And there bad.

I am on the 2nd round of the implanon. The 1st 3 years it was great. This last time SUCKS. My period comes every other month and will last for a month. I'm in the process of getting it removed. I've had mood swings and no sex drive. I will never get it again

Been on the depo shot for 4 years and getting off it this summer. Not much gain for me (5# maybe), no period at all too. I just don't like this acne/bloating/excessive bleeding during you-know-what and a few other things. Going to try a pill for a while to see. The shot was just easier to have every 3 months than daily!

The fact is that your doctor is not going to think your crazy if you make an appt. for bad cramping and ask them for the options.  The thing about asking your doctor is that they KNOW you!  They know your hormone levels, you can tell them your lifestyle, and they can help you make a decision.

If you don't want to pay for a doctor visit, go to Planned Parenthood and see if you qualify for free services.  (I'll probably get yelled at for that advice.)  Asking here is just going to get a bunch of people saying what they have and why they like it.  It tells you NOTHING about how it's going to affect your body, hormones, etc.

Not to mention if you google birth control, it'll tell you all you need to know.

You need to see a good gynecologist and find out why you have bad cramps, especially suddenly. Could be fibroid tumors, endometriosis, or another health problem that requires treatment.
You should be going once per year anyway for an annual checkup. If you have insurance, they cover the full cost of that visit and annual testing.

most doctors will tell you once every 3 years now. Or at least mine did. I go every 6 months, but I have a high chance of developing cervical cancer. I also get a lot of abnormal paps and have to get biopsys done often. Which suuuck

To each their own, but be careful with the Depo shot. My sister was on it for 6 years, she's been off it now for about 3-4, she has had very irregular periods and has had 2 miscarriages since....Dr said it was because she was on the shot so long, her hormones are all over the place.

I had the implant, wasn't fond of it. It made me gain weight bad and I'm still trying to get it off. I had irregular periods that could last up to a month, sometimes no period. No worry about getting pregnant either it killed all sex drive whether it worked or not. Some do love it, but it wasn't for me. I would start off with something like the pill, it's easy to change if it doesn't work. getting the doctor to take the implannon from my arm was like pulling teeth.

It's the new recommendations because they are getting ready for a one payer system and they don't want to have the burden of actually paying for yearly pap smears. It's no different with the automakers saying to get your oil changed every 3 months and now that most auto makers include oil changes, they say up to 10,000. miles. What a joke.

I use the pills. The first brand of pill caused bad acne so I switched to a different pill. Much better. I have heard people having A LOT of troubles with IUD's like staying in place, uterine lining problems, etc. I suggest not to do the implant, heard it is awful to get out and you have no regulation of the hormones you are getting. Depo is supposed to increase your risk of blood clots, and be one of the ones with adverse side affects but it all depends on the person. It is not true that birth control will necessarily make you gain weight, but it actually messes with your hunger hormones and cravings so that is how you gain weight.

Depo shot for me.....absolutely no side effects yay!

Depo for me too, after my first little girl. Only side effects are that about the 3 weeks before I get the next shot I spot/ bleed lightly and the week before I'm hungry and grouchy like I'm PMSing! No weight gain, no break outs, no bloating so far. Going on a year. Once I figured out that I get 2 1/2 months with no period then a 3 week long period right at the end I can work around it. LOL

If my doctor told me to get a pap ever 3 years, I'd find a new doc, lol.
That is the new recommendation actually. I was shocked when my doctor told me. However, I still have to get a physical and pelvic yearly in order to have my BC script renewed.

It's the new recommendations because they are getting ready for a one payer system and they don't want to have the burden of actually paying for yearly pap smears. It's no different with the automakers saying to get your oil changed every 3 months and now that most auto makers include oil changes, they say up to 10,000. miles. What a joke.

This has actually been the recommendation for years now. It's not really new anymore. Don't start PAP's until age 21, regardless of sexual activity. Then go to PAP's every three years at age 25 if there have been successive normal PAP's. The reason has nothing to do with single party payer. It is because we were doing too many biopsies and other procedures, that could potentially compromise the competence of the cervix which puts you at risk for preterm labor, for PAP results that ended up being benign/transient. We were over treating something that wasn't actually a problem. Even if you do have an abnormal PAP now the recommendations for biopsy have decreased. There are all sorts of exceptions to these guidelines, of course, so you should talk to your doctor about what is appropriate for your age and GYN history.

If your doctor is still PAPing you every year you should find a new doc - one who is actually current on the literature and outcomes.
