Location: Jersey Girl | I currently board my 2 geldings at a friends farm. I get a great price and excellent care. Been there for going on 3 years with no issues other then the travel time to get there is starting to get to me. The farm is located 25 miles from home, 35 from work. When I go on a work day I drive (round trip) 90 miles. I try to get out every other day. On more then a few occasions I do not go out or I don't go to a barrel race because I don't feel like all the driving.
Now I found a place 8 miles from home that seems it would work out just fine BUT it would be more money then what I pay now, but doable. I am torn between leaving them where they are and having more financial freedom but a minimum 35 minute ride to see them, or having them 10 min away and not as much financial freedom. (Don't forget I am a barrel racing addict and need my fix on a regualer basis ) I would be going back to self care at the place close to home (not an issue) but would be so nice to see my horses daily again and close to home. Any thoughts?

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | To me owning horses is all about taking care of them yourself, I love all the brushing, feeding time is great I love hearing my horses eating their feed and all that banging around that they do with their feeders and that crunching sound they make while eating. If you really enjoy your horses and I know that you do I would move them closer so that way you see them every day and you will be in the mood of going to barrels races you wont be all washed out on all that driving. |

I am leaning towards that too. I ended up where I am now because I was burned out on self care, needed a break and was ready to sell my horses to get that break. My friend gave me the chance to take a break while keeping my horses but this past year I have been struggling with not seeing my them everyday. |

Location: NC | Just think of all the money youll be saving gas wise to move them closer. Yes its more expensive but gas and wear and tear on your vehicle to go further make up for it. Its also hard when they are further away to want to go anywhere. By the time you get home from somewhere who wants to drive all that way home. Self care can be a pain but maybe if there are other people their you can buddy up and some one feed am and someone feed pm. I rough board so i know what its like |

True. But I have decided to move them, at least for the summer. If it doesn't work out my friend said I can move them back to her place. |

| Would you be the only boarder at the new place? Are there others you could trade chores with so you aren't getting burned out? Just a thought, I know some friends did that for a while at a self care barn, one gal lived right across the street so she fed in the mornings, a couple others did stalls for some folks who couldn't be there everyday, evening feelings etc and everyone was happy to help out when someone was on vacation etc.
I'm 25 miles now and moving to 5 miles in 2 weeks (holy crap 2 weeks!) and I can't wait. The travel time alone is worth it to me, plus my guy requires some extra care so even though I don't have to I like to be there often and help take care of the diva - I enjoy the non riding duties as well. |

^^ This. Sit down and pencil it out, and figure out what you are currently spending on gas driving that far to ride. I was keeping my horse up at my parents' place through the winter (for free!), and when I actually penciled it out, it was cheaper to pay board rather than to pay for the gas to drive up there multiple times a week to ride. |

Let me try and answer all of your questions...No I will not be the only boarder there. Not sure yet if I can do a shared feeding yet. Will have to see once I get moved in. The BO will drop feed for me in the mornings (at no extra charge) if I want her to. She can also feed if I go away. My horses will have hay 24/7 so I was only going to feed once a day. Her dropping feed in the am is a bonus. My husband will help with the feedings if there is a day I don't want to go out. I am excited about the move. They will be 12 minutes away!! Moving day is this Saturday. |
