Location: NE Texas | OK, so the EGR cooler is failing in our Dodge diesel truck. This happened to my mom's truck a couple of years ago. She chose to do the EGR delete and get the tuner to bypass all of the codes being her truck was out of warranty. We are trying to figure out our options. Our concern is that if the emissions tests ever begin on the diesel pick ups, then those trucks with the delete and the tuner will not pass emissions, as if you read the fine print on all tuners, it says they are not road legal and are cosidered "off road" vehicles.
The dealership has said they can clean the EGR filter and it should help for a little while, but eventually we will probably have to replace the whole system, which is very costly....or trade the truck, I guess.
Anyway, I don't want to do something to my truck to make it illegal or unregisterable due to emissions testing, but on the same note, I don't want to clean this now and a year from now have blown heads in my truck. Has anyone else dealt with this?

I was planning on doing the delete kit on my truck soon, but I was told that Texas is planning on starting emissions tests on diesels within the next year. I am not sure how reliable the source is but it made me reconsider it a bit... |

Location: NC | Coming from a state that does emission test commercial trucks, you should be fine. My current truck is straight-piped and passes. The last truck I had was chipped, had exhaust and still passed. Up in lovely NY if your truck is over a certain weight you are commercial. If you do not have a permanent cap/camper shell on back, you are commercial. (blew my exs mind. he was from AL) Current truck is a 3500, last truck was a 2500.
Edited to say, doesnt matter that I never use my truck for commercial purposes, only personal still commercial. Still has to do emission inspection every year. Just more money to register/re-new

| We have had lots of problems with the EGR code being shown when the truck would go into reduce power mode - spent several thousand dollars to no avail finally did the delete and it still would go into reduce power mode and throw the EGR code finally found a real diesel mechanic not just a tech who hooks it up to a computer and changes the part. He put a lift fuel pump and have not had a bit of trouble but I worry about the emission check now |

Location: MT | That's the whole reason we won't be buying a new diesel. Too much emissions crap to deal with! If it were mine, I'd take my chances and do a delete on it. |

I believe this was fixed after the 2010 model! That's what I heard anyway, I have a 2011 and knock on wood I have had no problems. I know a lot of people that had the 2010 and had the same problem. |
