Location: Missouri | Can someone explain the genetics? Can two bay parents have a rabicano offspring?
I've posted the color changes of my yearling and we decided she would be bay. But, now that she's shedding off, she had a lot of roaning in her flank. Maybe just funky baby shedding? Or, could she be rabicano?

Here's her whole body, it's easier to see that her flanks are considerably lighter. Although, she's obviously not done shedding.
She's always had a few stray white hairs at the top of her tail, but this is the first I've noticed in her flanks.
Can you tell it's our first foal?

Location: Oklahoma | Does she have the skunk tail? My buckskin stallion exhibits rabicano markings in his tail. Here's a picture of my boy's 1/2 brother who is a true rabicano (sorrel gelding)

She does have a few white hairs, but not a skunk tail. Are they born with that? Or, does it come in more as they age?
I have read that rabicano is expressed more strongly in red horses...your first two pics really show that!

I have read that rabicano is expressed more strongly in red horses...your first pic really shows that!
their dam is a dark bay with the rabicano markings and the sorrel was born with it. My buckskin only has the skunk tail. Other than that it is hard to tell on him if there is white throughout his body. |

Location: Missouri | Here's mine when she was a few days old. She had white flanks, and white on the sides of her tail. I thought this was just typical bay, but she's turned into the horse of many colors!

I don't know exactly how the gene works, but I know I bred my black mare who doesn't have rabicano to First Down French and got a sorrel rabicano colt.
The next year I bred a really loud sorrel rabicano to First Down French and got a palomino filly with LOUD rabicano. She has speckles under her armpits, flanks, under her chin, she has random white over her hock, a huge belly spot, and a ton of roaning all over. She's super cool. |

Location: NC | My gelding is a red rabicano. Coon tail. Roaning in the flanks. Whole 9 yards. He's Doc O Lena bred (grandson) so the genetics are there. His dam was a pally.
I've noticed the white gets more pronounced and spread out with each shedding. I wouldn't pin down a color for a baby until they were a little older with all the crazy color changes I've seen in young ones. I have a 9 year old who is roaning in his coat but no coon tail. So I have no idea what he's doing lol

| I have a mare that displays a coon tail and a small amount of "roaning" in her flanks certain times of the year. Would she be considered Rabicano?

FDF carries the rabicano gene. He is known for throwing quite a few babies with that coloring. I'm sure it's just hard to see on him because he's already so light. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | My mare has the "coon tail" and also has tiger stripes on the back of her legs. Sometimes during the summer she has white tipped flank hairs.
She's thrown many rabicano babies when she was a broodmare but I've yet to breed her since I rope off of her... Maybe it's time to do a check up on her and see if she would be healthy enough to carry a baby at her age. I'm getting baby fever from all these baby posts LOL 
Then again, Babies are work! I need to keep reminding myself that I have enough on my plate... But oh if only!

The person who replied on the FB group said she thought the roaning was due to KIT white spotting mutation, and not rabicano.
So, I have some reading to do! lol!
