My barrel horse is off for the whole year due to an injury, my backup horse is right where I want him to be, and in perfect shape. I have all summer ahead of me, rodeos on every weekend, but I have time on my hands for a project. I have ridden my whole life (I'm 16) and patterned two ex roping horses completely on my own, started and finished two horses on poles myself, I consider myself an advanced rider, I started a mini project last fall and took a horse that could barely lope circles, and got him automatically doing flying lead changes, and loping amazing figure eights. I have never done much with young horses, but my goal is to become a futurity trainer, and pattern and run futurity horses. I don't know where to start from here, Do I find a five year old green broke horse, or an eight year old ranch horse, I want to work all summer with it (five days/ week) and run exhibition depending on how far we get, and either sell it next summer because I can't run 3 barrel horses, or get it automatic enough for my little brother. I need advice and opinions please.

I would find something off the track or perhaps a reject reiner/cutter. See if you can find one that is still pretty sound but good minded. Def look for something with papers and better bloodlines. I bet you could move them pretty quick.

I'm going to a ranch sale this month and it's basically all reiner/cutters and ranch horses, I'm leaning towards one of those, rather then off the track, they seem pretty green broke to me, but maybe theres some out there that are good broke. I can handle anything but don't want something with buck or no brakes lol

This is generally true. OTT have less training BUT some of them are actually quieter personalities because they've seen so much in terms of crowds and lots of new horses in a busy environment. They can pick up on stuff plenty quick enough. Ranch horses may be pretty level headed and more broke until you get them in that busy environment. Cutting horses in particular can have hotter temperaments. Racing bloodlines appeal to a lot of barrel racers too so I wouldn't completely discount them. Obviously what matters most is getting something that will clock consistently. You can have success either way.

If this is one of your first projects I wouldn't get a green broke horse. and I wouldn't look at an old ranch horse just for resale value. I would look at a well broke three or four year old if I was in your position. One that does lead changes etc. just so you can have a good start on barrels and be exhibiting this summer like you said. The resale value will go up tremendously

I would get a broke horse with all the buttons, and take horsemanship clinics, by colts starters, reining/cow trainers

I find if you want to train futurity colts, you need the horsemanship foundation to understand the buttons, and get the feel of a horse.

I think you have the right idea!
I have a lot of experience with reining and cutting horses, not much with off the track horses. I would try to find a 3 or 4 year old at the sale with good bloodlines, that has been broke and will ride around good, then go from there. Majority of those horses will already have a level head, good foundation and good handle to take from there and do what you wish, if it is a good ranch horse sale. Keep resale value, size and temperament in mind when watching them.
Good Luck and let us know what you find
