Location: Midland, TX | Has anyone had or experimented with appaloosas? Or considered breeding to Silverado Rein? I know some people find them ugly but I like them Lol
Just curious how successful appaloosas are in the barrel pen!  |

| Rockinas had a solid appy - she was the WPRA Derby World Champion if I remember. Troubled Memories I believe was the sire and another one of his babies is a jam up 1D horse. I have ridden a few grade appies and they were also gritty, fast and hard workers.
No experience with the particular stud you are asking about. |

| I have to admit, I like a pretty blanketed appy. I keep teasing my husband that I am going to find a well bred running app stud to breed his head horse too. All my grandfather ever rode was appys.
I have not been able to find any performance record on Silverado Rein. I looked up his pedigree and he is all app. If I was going to experiment with breeding to an app for a barrel horse, I would pick something that has racing quarter up close. |

Location: Texas | I like apps that don't look like apps..... I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover but...... I do. (I feel the same about paints! LOL)
But, there is a jam up barrel and pole app for sale down the road from me, and if my grandaddy wouldn't roll over in his grave, I would snatch him up in a heart beat! |

Location: Northwest | My friend has one she is just starting to run and the horse is absolutely amazing. Granted it was sired by Captain Biankus and the dam was an appaloosa. (The mare looks full on appy-spots, very little mane or tail so it is pretty funny to watch people's reactions when she smokes a run)

A good horse is a good horse, they come in all shapes, sizes, breeds, colors..... it boils down to that individual horse.
Just keep in mind NOT all QH's are barrel horses, so don't disregard a potentially nice barrel horse just because it has spots...I personally prefer them with spots and would not hesitate to buy Appaloosas! |

Location: Bandera, TX | Many years ago I used to jump ride lots of horses. Most of those rides were for association point shows. I would rather ride the Appy than the Paints in those days. I remember riding a stallion in a match race that had a heart of gold. I believe that sucker ran nearly back to back 6 times in one afternoon. I told the owner, I wouldn't swing my leg over him again as I was afraid he was going to bleed or worse. He would have easily run his heart out for me again. The "Dugosh" and "Maspero" famlies from the San Antonio area bred some fast Apps and the Edwards family from Pipe Creek TX have had many world champs from their stock. If your looking for a serious ride talk to them on breeding as they would be in the know.
I loved running the "poles" head to head during the Houston and San Antonio stock shows. Heck the crowds got so into those match runs. More so than when I would make my barrel run during the same perf.
I rode several really nice Apps that I remember and I roped off a paint mare that was a smoking all around horse. She loved to run the poles. I don't think I ever had a time greater than 21 flat on her. The only hole in her was I better have thrown my loop and be backing into the box or she was going to get short on me as she didn't run up in the hole shot that I would like. I rarely could rope in the less than 3 sec range without breaking the barrier. |

Location: Rocky Mountains | Are you kinding appys can be some of the best horses for barrel racing.. If someone had a bad experience with one they usually end up feeling poorly for all of them. Anyways! I run an appy! She is one of the fastest, well built, and athletic horses I have ever swung my leg over! She runs in the 1d-2d and she's just turned 5 this spring! If you can go for it! They tend to be a stocky set of horses and I love that. But everyone feels differently. it all just depends on the horse as one. |

This is my Appaloosa Gelding sired by Gay Bar Silver. We rescued him three years ago this past Febuary. He has a heart of gold. He is currently running low 4D, times or winning the 5d against some of the tough, South Texas competition. "Tuff" is finished(still working on more speed) in Barrels, Poles, Figure 8 Barrels, Figure 8 Stake Race and is about to go to a trainer for Breakaway. He will be totally finished and seasoned by the time my 2 1/2 year old grandson can ride by himself. Until then, "MawMaw" will continue to season him and Bryce will continue to ride his "Tuffy" in leadline classes. This photo was take at a Fundraiser Show where Tuff and I won 1st in four events as well as the All Around Buckle.

LOL You weren't satisfied blowing everyone's mind out of the water with running just an appy bred horse. It had to be half arab as well to make sure you got the two most overlooked breeds in the barrel pen all at once huh!? Tehe
I'm starting to not overlook a horse by it's appearance. (after getting beat by a horse I overlooked because of coloring) It's taken lots of years and experience tho to overlook it.

Right!!!! With all our kids, have I have a soft spot for arabs. They were always free and tough enough to stand up our hard riding kids! And my dad showed on the app circuit in the 60s and 70s and I just love their temperment. Dazzle is just a dollface and super secret....but we didn't pay a dime for her ;) best kids horse ever. AND she's cowy! |

Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | I had a REALLY nice one that I lost last October. She was old race lines x cow/foundation QH and ran in the top 20 at our state NBHA finals a week before she died :(. Still have her full sister whom I'm breeding this year to a QH stud that is Playgun x Dash For Perks bred.
This is the mare I lost, ApHC papers (42 lifetime points and 2 ROMs) but she was not colored.
This is her full sister, who has regular ApHC papers, but greyed out. I'm planning on this being a keeper baby and training and running it myself.
And this is an Alias King (Spotted Bull bred) granddaughter that I'm hoping to breed to the same stud and should get a colored dun baby. She's an awesome producer! Not planning on selling this baby either but we will see.

I had a Arab/appy growing up to. she was the best, I had so much fun with her!! super fast and quick. They use to call her 'grease lightening' at the local arena when I was a kid. :-)

To me, as long as they like barrels, have the ability, and have the speed..who cares what they look like..yea looks are fun but you aren't in a halter class being judged on looks, your being judged on who crosses that timer fastest. |

She asked for opinions and I gave her mine. I used to race an app, 20 second pole horse. Never took a lame step in his life, and would win about anywhere I took him. Too bad he was 20 shades of psycho and would throw you just as soon as let you run. He was a rank SOB. And every app I've ever rode had the same stupid mind tricks. So I'm getting too old and too smart to deal with them. |

| I never ran him in any big shows, since he couldn't be stalled and had major gate issues, I only ran him at the pole classes at barrel races, but it was against some NICE pole horses that ran in large shows. |

Location: South of Canada and North of Mexico | I have one but due to babies and life don't have him finished yet. His sire is I Love Willie and has a nice set of papers on him. He's all qh DFC on the bottom and mostly tb on top, goes back to Mr Spotted Bull? And Count Fleet and just because he has spots and ApHC papers many people have passed him up when I've had him for sale, many people are anti appaloosa even if they are barely appaloosa. Wouldn't buy another if I wasn't planning on keeping forever. So no one wanted him unless I gave him away so I guess I'm stuck with him. Here's his pedigree and he's the horse in my avatar.
