| Rat Terrier. Probably biased because we have had some great ones, but it seems like the Jack Russels I see are more yappy. Our Rats only bark if there is a problem. They are so loyal and smart, not scared of anything. I absolutely love them and think they are the perfect size too. |

| Either are great dogs - We have had some great jack russel dogs and are very loyal to the breed. However in all our travels I do see many JR that can be yappy but the interesting thing and don't want to get into a discussion about this. The yappy ones all seem to belong to barrel racers which we are - ha ha however we competed in cutting horse events for years and the cutter jacks were quiet very trained and very social. The jacks can be very aggressive toward the same sex and can go from play to all out war in a matter of seconds. When we were getting out first one I ask a cutting horse trainer who also raised jacks what to look for she laughed and said make sure their tail is docked long enough to reach in and grab one without getting bit and long enough to grab to pull them out of pipes when they are hunting. We ended up getting one of her puppys and was in love with the breed. |

Location: CTX | Never had a JRT so can't speak for them, but we have a rat terrorist... I got his out of the shelter in 2005, and he was guesstimated at 4 years old. I had to get him neutered at that point, so he pees on EVERYTHING!! (Think it's a dominant thing)
Also he yaps, ALL THE TIME!!
We have 5 acres, but he gets in arguments with our heeler (who can roam around) so we can't leave both of them out together when not supervised.... so we needed to figure out which one of them could run free. Well, the rat also digs everywhere.... and he like to chase and explore... beyond our fences..
We decided he had to get his own pen, it is lined with drive way gravel (can't remember the name...) to keep him from digging too much. He still digs, but can't go very deep. We let him out when we are outside, and his pen is big enough for him to run in, so no problem there..
Hubby told me we could never get another terrier, period.... he tolerates him.... I told him, I got him out of the shelter, he will stay with me tiil his last day. I will not give him up because he has some quircks...
But to be honest, if I could get one at 6-8 weeks old and be able to train him myself I wouldn't have a problem with another rat.
Just my observations and experiences with a rat terrorist.....

Location: Central Texas | I'm partial to the Rat Terriers. I had one for 16 yrs. I rescued her from freezing to death when she was about 4 weeks old....never intended to keep her ( I'm a big dog person) but I did. She was a great dog if you over looked her ability to escape any pen. She was never yappy. She held her own with the big dogs and was super protective of me when I was sleeping. I think she thought her job in life was to guard me from any and all people and animals while I was asleep. |

I am amused that you call them Rat Terrorists!
We call them Rat Terrorists and Jack Devils!
My grandmother had a whole slew of Terrorists. They bark and bite. It could be because she was too old to properly discipline. A friend of mine had a wonderful one however. He was a great little dog and went every where with her.
I personally have never met a Devil I ever liked. The ones I knew that didn't nip, yapped, the ones that didn't yap pee'd on everything, and they were all escape artists. Some people we roped with had one and he was awful. He would pee on saddles, bridles hanging on the fence, halters left dangling at the trailer, rope bags, jackets, you name it. If he could lift his leg on it he would. He gave me a sever distaste for the breed. Our old neighbors had three of them and they were always out. After they moved out of the area they ended up losing one completely. It escaped their yard and they were never able to locate it.

Location: South Georgia | I have two JRT's and they are the best dogs I have ever had my entire life. They are 13 and 12 now, but they still get up and go like they are spring chickens. They get excited when we have visitors, but other than that, they are calm and cool. They are my shadows and follow me everywhere. I don't want to imagine life without my boys. |

Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | Neither are on my "wish list" but my MIL has a jack. They come to my house every weekend and while Penny can be kinda sweet....I'm not her biggest fan. She isn't a yapped, but growls all the dang time at my dogs (it's their house) and sometimes my son who just turned 4--uh... No!!!!
You have to keep a pretty close eye on her outside of she will get on the trail of something and disappear. She also sheds something horrible...all year long. She's pretty neurotic and chases light specks and shadows and won't stop. And, to top it off, she poops in my basement pretty regularly. So no, I'm not a fan. But my MIL loves her and it's pretty much all she has left, so I keep my mouth shut but don't let her on my furniture. |

| We have 2 JRTs. Neither are yappy or crazed but they have free roam of 60 acres & I am sure they are moving all day. They live to trail ride with me and I love that. Both were rescues. Before them I had corgis and that by far were my favorite two dogs ever. I know some of it is bred in them but some dogs tend to be what you make them and it has alot to do with how you spend your time with them. I also have a long haired chihuahua whos a straight up bad to the bone killer and shes plenty yappy enough for 10 dogs. |

Location: MS | My mom raises Jack Russells and I've honestly never been much of a fan. But, my 2 year old that is scared to death of a dog picked him out a puppy and named her (out of the blue and completely surprised us). We have to stop at my mom's house everyday so he can play with her. We will be bringing her home sometime this week or next week.
My mom's are crazy but she doesn't train them or discipline them. She just lets them do whatever they want. I hope ours will be different because we will train her and I hope she will be a companion, and protector, for my little boy when he's running around our place. |

sounds like the males are very territorial and heavy hikers... lol so are these breeding males or nuetered? do you think its a training issue or breed issue?
I am looking for a shadow and one who is respectfull of me. Will i be able to call off a terrier if they are after something? again is this a training issue or breed? |

she broke both her frot legs jumping out my truck
and now I have two jack Russell's, which I love
very hearty, loyal dogs, some are neurotic,
but one of mine is laid back, very obedient and a Mommas boys
by my side all the time. And protective!!. If I had to choose
between the two again it would be a jack. |

Location: Mi | I've had a Rat Terrier for 15 yrs, she just turned 15 yesterday actually, so I might be a little partial. I've never had a Jack Russel but have no interest in having one either, the ones I've seen anyways. My Rat goes everywhere with me. Shes NOT yappy. She will bark once in awhile, but for the most part you never hear her. She is a hunter still at 15. She travels everywhere with me, and you never know shes with you. Out in the barn shes with me, but always hunting looking smelling and will go after something if she finds it and it doesn't belong, but you can also call her back too if you don't want her to. She doesn't bother our cats, chickens and things like that. She has been the BEST dog! If I could have another just like her I would in a second. Shes hardy enough to fend for herself, but shes small enough to make it esay to take her places etc. Shes 10 lbs and 10" tall. LOVE her to pieces! |

Yes, the males will mark their territory. I believe it is a training issue. I have two boys, and neither of mine do it....unless we go to another person's yard or whatever. Mine are mindful, listen to commands, do tricks, and will stay with me in the yard. If they were to run after something, they'd most definitely stop if I called them. All training issues. Also, mine are not "yappy." I have one that barks more than the other, but its not excessive and its not like you generally think of when you think of a "yappy" dog at all.

I had a male and a female Jack, I can't imagine that I could have called either off of something - ever. The female "stalked" my koi and killed several of them, the male killed any cat that came in the yard (but was fine with the house cats).
I raised 2 litters - neat, fun dogs BUT, I don't think I would have another - I like the way Heelers mind and my Jacks were too hard-headed. |

Location: North Dakota | I have a jack russell and I love him to pieces, but I would not get another. He is a wild man! Like to pee on things (neutered as a pup), is very territorial, hyper when he was younger, and does not socialize with other dogs very well. In fact he turns into the tazmanian devil in about two seconds, without warning. I'm sure that is my fault since he doesn't go out with me anymore to be socialized. He used to be a gentleman when we lived in town and took him all over with us. When we moved back to ND he found roaming on 40 acres much more fun than loading up with me and traveling to barrel races. He LOVES little kids and loves to be around my husband and I. He takes up residence on my lap everynight and if he could sleep in the bed with me at night he would.LOL He is not a jumper nor is he a yappy dog. I think if you know how to train those types of dogs your golden. They are loyal little stinkers.

Location: South Georgia | Also, to give you an idea of temperment. Of my two boys, one of them can be out loose in the yard when my chickens are out. He doesnt bother them a bit. The other....not sure I'd try it. LOL In other words, they arent all crazy lunatics like some think. It may have to do with bloodlines as well. Both of mine are from a reputable breeder in Florida.
They have never met a dog they didnt like. No aggression, etc. One of mine likes children less than the other, but he just tries to avoid them.

Ours was the short legged one also and Bandit was just the best dog ever. Other than shedding enough hair to clog a vacuum cleaner daily that is, LOL!!! My sister has a Rat and a JRT right now also, her Rat terrier is really yappy, the JRT is a pretty quiet girl. |

Location: NC | Had a JRT 9 years until he lost his mind, know hes with an older retired woman and she loves him. He was a great dog. Very social but very driven. Will never forget finding him rolling around a young opossum. Never had an accident in house. Hated cats. He lost his mind towards the end of us having him though. Got into the lazy susan cabinet in kitchen (multiple times) and destroyed salt, sugar, baking soda, and coffee filters. (i dont mean torn up, i mean shredded to the point of confetti) tried crating him and he broke out. Last straw was got a metal crate and he chewed the bars off and left blood everywhere. He had nothing wrong physically (took him to vet). Tried every rescue, people we knew, and right before we were going to put him down a friend of my moms from work said her mother would take him. Shes retired and he goes everywhere with her.
Edited to add he loved to get loose and take off to chase cats. He always came home but he loved to escape. Would find the smallest hole and was gone

Location: on a hill | I have 3 jacks, 2 females & 1 male. I suggest a male if your wanting a buddy. My females are varmint hunters and could care less that I exist. My male likes being with people and is more loveable. I've noticed the same thing with other breeds too. Males are more loving. |

| We have had both and a 50/50 Jack Rat. Very cool dogs, smart, hard headed yes. The female Jack Rat was very bonded to my husband, went everywhere with him. The 50/50 cross was probably my favorite. When they get on a scent of something though, they are tough to get back, until they are done with it. We never had trouble in public places but at home riding out over the hills where they are already not close to us, and sniffing around, is when it was an issue sometimes. I think a shock collar would have probably taken care of it, but we never tried it. Ours were not hyper, but they were outside alot. |

| My good friend had a JR and we have a Rat. The JR was much more hyper and needed more mind stimulation (hunting, etc). My Rat loves to hunt, but doesn't need as much as she did. My rat is an absolute snuggle bug and has been since we got him at 8 weeks. The JR didn't seem to want to as much, mostly it seemed because she was too hyper and couldn't sit still. She was very friendly, just on the move alot.
If I had to choose, I probably will always go with a Rat Terrier. |

Location: Southeast Louisiana | I fostered for years and have had many of both breeds. The traits are similar and each individual will have different personalities. I've had temperaments from calm to hyper in both breeds. I don't think neutering or spaying could fix much of their problems. If you get one that is just committed to digging or really driven to hunt and kill critters, they will be like that for life. Training can only do so much. And they're born that way, so getting a puppy doesn't guarantee that you can raise a non-yapper or calm down a hyper one. My best advice would be that, if there are certain traits you're looking for, look for a rescue dog whose foster can tell you what their personality is like. There are many nice, young dogs of both breeds that end up in foster care because their buyer didn't understand what they were getting into. |

Location: MD | I had a JRT/Heeler mix. He was the best, unfortunately had to be put to sleep awhile ago. He was a terror as a puppy but so darn smart. He had no hunting or prey drive. Deathly terrified of cats, never barked or marked much unless you took him out for the occasional walk. He preferred fly ball instead, it was a real hoot to watch him do back flips in the air to catch a ball. Of course heeler was a big part of his intelligence but you could call him off anything, he could have been doing anything and he'd stop dead in his tracks and hustle back to you(unlike my aussie that piddle farts all the way back to me.) Our neighbor had a full JRT that didn't get much attention/correct discipline/exercise and he was just totally batsh*t crazy. he was mean, naughty, and an escape artist.
Most Jacks I've met and dealt with are on opposite ends of the scales, either angels or devils. I love the little minis and hopefully will have another in the future. I need to be mentally prepared for a dog like that. |

The Jack Russels are more territorial, protective, and are a breed that is for true dog lovers only....I got along great with them, because I am a dog nut. |

| I've had two rat terriers and one JR/terrier cross. They were all high energy, loving dogs. The rat terrier I have now sleeps in the house as he finds all kinds of things to bark at if he's outside-never barks in the house. He also finds imaginary things to bark at during the day! The JR knew no fear and got beat up severely a few times because of it. All were great with my son-he grew up with them getting the first when he was about five. My current rat terrier can not be turned loose at shows as he loves to go visit all the other people and dogs. He is a good travel companion, never gets car sick and loves to sit on the console and watch where we're going.

Location: Southern Oregon | I have had three jack russels. The first two from the same breeder had horrid seizures and terrible attitudes. I got both as rescues and they would run off anytime they could squeeze out the door. Then I got my PARSON'S JR female! I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this dog. She really acts nothing like my other jacks or any of my friends Jacks. She is the sweetest thing, loves the kids and anybody that will pet her for that fact. She rides well in the truck, great on trails. NOT animal aggressive at all, she actually took care of the bummer lambs and baby rabbits with me. She is the best at detecting when BIRTH is about to happen. She will wake me up and MAKE me go to the barn every time, lambing season, horses and well even the with the birth of my son! lol This dog is AWESOME. I would have a million of them if they were like her. |
