My horse ran in a JW Hack prior to me owning. I tried him in other bits and he's funny about his mouth. I finally decided to try the JW Hack and just got it in. I don't have any experience running in this headgear. Any advice, suggestions, stories to help me out? He is a free runner and a powerful horse. Thank you!

I think it is the perfect bit LOL. It really fits my hands so I have no qualms throwing it on a horse and sending them through the pattern after 10 minutes of riding in it. After using JW hacks for 10 years on half a dozen horses, I have developed a bit of a feel for when it will work. I guess my advice would be to just ride in it and test out the controls pretty thoroughly so you know how much of a response you get when you ask him to slow down, stop or turn. If it's the bit he was previously run in, he'll probably pick it up just fine after you ride in it a little bit.

i have one and have used it on different horses that have never used a hack. As long as the horse has a decent/good whoa I've never had a problem. I agree with o/p put it on and take him for a spin- sure it will be easy for him to adjust back.

This is the first run that my boyfriend's mare made in a hack. I was riding her while he recovered from a surgery and we were going to kill each other if I didn't get rid of the bit he had been using on her.
