Not just regular red mineral/salt blocks, but the ones with vitamins and minerals. For example, the Purina Free Balance 12:12 block.https://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=9c5b33a2-ded9-46f1-bcf3-c10f4caa07ff

It's cheap as heck and in theory, I like the fact that it provides something for my horses to do other than just eating hay all day (they live in pens). Also one of them is naturally hot and on stall rest for the next 4-6 months so I'm trying to cut out as much extra feed as possible but still want him to get all his nutrients. So good or bad?

We always have mineral blocks and or salt licks in our pasture. Usually have.several in horse pastures and cow pastures. Not always the same brand but ours lick them and scrapenthem with their teeth.

I've had better luck with the loose 12:12 mineral. I feed the Purina right now.

Someone at our barn has a Equipride tub and they left it out and my horse couldn't resist scraping it with his teeth and lick away at it. I was thinking of getting him that....he doesn't touch the Redmond rock salt block I bought him. :/

I don't use them but our cutter friends have them out for their whole herd and swear by them. I know they're in a tub but not sure of the name. During the winter some of the horses got good round bales and just the licks. And they were mud fat

We used to, but the horses didn't seem to like them. A few years ago we tried an Equilix tub and they devoured it. So we've fed those ever since:)

Eta: they also have a salt block at their disposal

I like the idea of having a mineral block out for mine. From time to time I set one out, I only have one small problem with it. lol

The mare in my avatar will stop and eat the whole thing at once if you let her. I have 7 horses, when I put a block out, I have to put her up. Everyone else gets their fill and then they go on their happy way. This mare will eat the whole thing and not slow down, she's always been this way. Another crazy thing is her 2 year old son is turning out just like her in that regard! I don't get it, everybody else is fine but these 2 will go through a block in a day no problem.

Don't want to thread Jack but I use protein tubs along with alfalfa out in a pasture for a mare that's kind of a hard keeper and that's the only way she stays fat. She's getting bred next week and was wondering if I should stick to my same program. I think they are 20% tubs.
