| So I had a dog that's a survivor of parvo. He had it in 2009, so it's been a while. I plan on getting a Pyrenees pup soon for my chickens and calves we're buying down the road.
I know it can live in the ground for a year or two, I also know that a dog that's had it can shed it periodically. My dog does NOT poop in our yard at all. he goes out into the woods to do that business as that's how I trained him. BUT I'm not sure if that'll make a difference, even though its spred via fecal matter?? because of course, he does scratch his butt on the ground, lay down, and it can be microscopic to my eyes. lol
My question is, will the parvo vacc prevent a puppy from getting it. Because I know it's meant to build their immune system up from getting it. I just want to have an idea of how long after the shot I need to wait to bring them into contact with my dog. I've had one die from parvo... learned the hard way how long it lives in the ground... it was HORRIBLE and I never want to witness it again. She wasn't vaccinated though like she supposed to have been. |

Location: White Mountains of AZ | It can actually live in the ground for up to 7 years! Did you disinfect your yard and house after the other pup had it? I'd just make sure when you get the pup, that the mom is UTD on her vaccines! If mom is UTD, you could wait until the pup is about 8 weeks before giving the first shot. ideally you'd want to wait until they have gotten their 3 shot series before introducing another dog, but as long as you disinfect you, (Clothes, shoes hands) and the yard and everything you should be ok! |

| okay. It was 3 years ago when I had that puppy. But she didnt have any of the shots I was told she had.
The plan is, to spray the porch and disinfect the area i'll have the pup in. Going to be an inside dog for a bit just so it's well rounded. So I keep it to disinfected areas, and my other dog out of those for the time being. Then she/he should be fine.
should I disinfect my shoes and interior of my home as well?

I definitely would make sure you disinfect everything until that pup has it's 16 weeks Parvo shot. Parvo is nasty, as you know, but it can be spread easily as you go to the park or grocery store, not even knowing get a bit of fecal matter on your shoe with parvo. You come home, your puppy touches your shoe with the fecal matter, and they can get it. Most of the time your vet can order you in a bottle of their disinfectant and you can just spray it on your shoes and clothes when you get home. When I have a litter of pups, I do that and I've never had parvo at my house, but it's just better safe then sorry! |

| Yea.. I def don't want to ever have another dog get it. My older dog, now 7, had it and it costs us 1200 to vet him through it. The puppy just deteriorated way too fast for us to save her. Which is of course, why i'm very weary. Especially since I'm paying a good amount for the pup. thanks for your help! |

| ha ha wont be a problem. I'll probably take a 100 a day when I get her. I'm a sucker for puppies. I've been wanting one for a while. Dad actually said I should get one... me the girl whos like dr.do little an brings all manner of creatures home. LOL my dad NEVER tells me to bring a puppy home. It was a first. |

| ha ha. haven't found one yet. Everyone charges an arm and leg for these babies! I think he wants one to keep coyotes off the calves when we get them. and it'll be good for them to protect my chickens too. |

I can't tell you how many puppies I've heard of that were "supposed" to have ALL their shots and didn't. I've seen many friends pups die from parvo after they supposedly had their 16 week parvo shot etc. and didn't recieve any shots come to find out.
Such a sad situation and very preventable if the previous owners had just been honest. |

Location: Southern Oregon | Personally I wouldn't take any chances and I would either have the breed keep the pup until all three of the series shots are given or have a family member help out. Parvo is horrible. |

yea.. if I dont have paper proof from a vet with dates on it. I will be taking the pup straight to the vet and I wont be 'paying for shots' when buying the puppy unless they can prove it's had it's shots. |

My Zoe survived it, he was in vet care for a week though. Cost us 1300 big buckeroos.. But I felt personally responsible and I had to do everything I could to save him.
My puppy that got it.. gosh she was gorgeous. I still cry about it when I think about it and my heart breaks. I didn't know they died the way they do.. bleeding out like that. I feel like such a horrible person for not just putting her down.
This was Zathena before she passed away. Beautiful little soul. Loved her so much.
This is my Zodiac, not only has this boy survived parvo. He's survived being shot in the face by a .22 ( if you look close at his face, you can see one eye isn't really blue, it's glazed. Lost sight and hearing on his left side. ) he was also hit by a car. To this day at 7 years old, he's one of the happiest dogs I know. And much fatter than in this picture. LOL thanks to ALLLLLL the looooove my mom FED him when I moved out. =/ he's back on a dog food diet now ha ha

| Somewhat off topic-I think the big problem isn't always breeders not giving the shots, it's improper storage. A lot of breeders do their own puppy shots because of expense. The vaccines have to be kept cold, even the drive from the store is far enough to damage them but almost no one brings a cooler to buy them. They have done studies about how many dogs are immune after each age at vaccine, I think by 16 weeks it is over 90%.
Also, the antibodies from the mom interact with the shot.
The vet told me if they have been nursing they have some immunity from mom, and that will counteract the vaccine. That is why they do multiple shots for pups, to get them after the mom's immunity has worn off, but before exposure.
On topic- I had a foster that had parvo, and she didn't make it. I sterilized the areas immediately. We got a puppy about a year and a half later. I kept him away from the areas she had been & watched him like a hawk, and he was fine. I read that it is worse & lives longer in the shaded areas, so inside the barn or inside the doghouse, or even inside your house. The sun kills some of it. |

Location: Texas | you should vaccinate your puppy three times for parvo. let me check on time frames. Puppies are most at risk between 6 and 12 months of age, when their maternal antibodies wear off. It's important they get all three shots, not just one or two..
ETA- I was close, its first shot 6-8w, 2nd shot 10-12w, third shot 14-16 w, and a booster at one year.
