Someone is hosting a benefit to help with a tornado that hit recently.. But it's going to be a glow in the dark race. They said the warm up arena will be lit and then alley way is lit by hanging rope lights on the fence and the barrels will "glow" but no lights in the arena.

This sounds like a fun idea and maybe if it were a playday type deal it would be fun. Has anyone been to something like this? I just can't imagine there being a great turn out or everything going smoothly.. Barrel racing is dangerous enough as is.

Hate to be a party pooper but doubt I would run at  a glow in the dark race.

Barrel Bash has done this a couple times for their show at Gordyville that is held in Oct. They actually have to limit the entries and they run it slot race style. It's a lot of fun to watch. Some amazing times have been run too! People decorate their horses with glow in the dark stuff and really get into it. I'd say that you really would have to have a horse you trust to send in there and not knock. But I suppose we also have to remember that horses see better in the dark than we realize too. :

I'd do it. Sounds like a lot of fun. But we have gathered our ranch horses in the wee hours of dawn, using a spot light to find them. I will tell you one thing, we live in some nasty rough country and those suckers can FLY at night. I think they really do see on an entire different level than we do.

Maybe if I could wear a headlight on my head, LOL
I have helped friends catch and rope loose cattle way late at night off highways, I would be the spot light carrier on my horse spot lighting the head of the cattle while they rope them, man what a rush that was...

I'd do it! But I like riding at night, even your eyes adjust some if there's no light around. There's nothing like heading out at day & getting back home at night :) I love it, your senses heighten & it's like you can hear every breath your horse takes :)

The main barrel race at the benefit isnt a glow in the dark race.  Its a side race that they are doing at the benefit.

My friend won the one at Gifford.  I want to say she ran one of the (if not the) fastest times of the weekend in the dark.  :)  It was an interesting video to say the least!

I think it'd be cool. I've ridden at night a lot of times during the summer, your eyes eventually adjust surprisingly well.

The only thing that I think would be hard is running from a lit area to a dark one. If the warm up is attached and is lit up its going to be hard on both your eyes going from a brightly lit warm up to a dark alley/arena. If there was a way to stand in the dark a little bit before your run that would be best.

I'd do it! Sounds like a blast!! I've heard there will be some sort of lights like Christmas lights around the whole arena, and at least the barrels glow in the dark! Beats loping through a cornfield in the dark and using a tiny cell phone light to figure out where the barbed wire fence is! That probably wasn't smart.

Who was that? I can't remember who won last year.

While I'm not as adventurous as I used to be, LOL, it is a lot of fun to watch. It's a bit like a costume contest of sorts with the glow in the dark items on the horse and rider. At Gifford, they limit the number of riders, so it doesn't go on forever.

It's really not SUPER dark in the arena as the warm up area is lit, so some light comes through.

Here's on old video (From FB, I think this was 2013. You can't really see the glowinghttps://video.xx.fbcdn.net/hvideo-xpa1/v/t42.1790-2/1242087_10151986587297392_2088182347_n.mp4?oh=af501d202879e9d302e2c7c3853c9170&oe=5555010C

Wouldn't that suck if you laid down the best run of your LIFE and you couldn't even see it on video haha "I just broke the arena record by a full second...here's my video, but you can't actually see me. I swear it was good though."

That's Awesome! I think she did win it last year. I don't know her personally though.

I had a great time watching. No one had any issues with the horses freaking out- I think they see better than we think. Plus, it wasn't dangerously dark. It was dark over the bleachers and I had no issues going to the bathroom and getting back to my seat.

That happened to me once...but not at a glow in the dark barrel race. A barrel race lasted too long at an arena, and nobody new how to turn the lights on and the ground was terrible (several girls went down that night). I was one of the last to run and my mare and I turned before the 3rd barrel. Not cool.
