What is everyone's preference when hauling a foal? I will be hauling a foal that is 3 weeks old to take mom to the breeders. Do I use a stock type trailer and leave them both loose? Do I use the stock type trailer but tie mom? Do I use my 3 horse, put mom in the first divider and take out the second for the foal to be loose? Or Do I borrow a friends trailer who has a stud divider and put the foal in that stall? This will be a 5 hour trip for mom and baby. I want to do it as safely as possible.

I turn mare and foal loose in the trailer .. no drama .. and if foal lays down
it is unlikely for a loose mare to step on her foal and foal can nurse anytime
it wants to...
If you tie the mare .. the lead needs to be long enough for mare to nose the baby
which can end up being a problem since mare is restricted to a small area and
foal is in danger if it lays down too close to his mom ... same with using a small stud
stall etc etc .. foals have been known to get a leg under a panel and injure themselves
etc etc ..
As you know when you haul a loose horse they will turn backwards and will not move
around very much during the entire time the trip takes ...

I turn them loose in a stock trailer. If it's a long trip be sure to put extra straw or shavings in for the foal. I've had a 1-2 week foal on a 16 hour round trip before with no issues whatsoever.

I would use stock type and tie mom loose but not so loose she puts a leg through but let baby free to do whatever in trailer that's how I go..if using a slant take the dividers out or baby will walk under and scrape back or neck ..

We haul mares and foals back and forth to the breeding farm frequently. I haul in a stock type trailer and tie the mare. I have hauled longer distances like this as well with no problems.
