I saw an advertizement from a ranch in IL offering a Barrel horse Dash at their barrel race! I think this would be a blast to have at some bigger races! I'd enter for sure! What do you guys think?

Barrel Horse Dash
Spring Classic
Sat May 23rd !!!
Race 1on1 at 250yrds
Pays out just like a 4D barrel race. $20 entry fee per horse. $5 office fee.
Must race in western saddle and horse must be a barrel horse. Open to men and women.

I saw that also! I think it would be a blast! I had an OTQH mare that would have ate it up! I would love to try it one day.

Some of the playdays in my area used to have 1/4 mile races. At the time, I didn't have a horse fast enough to enter. Now I wish there were some around! It looked like a blast.

I would totally enter.

I was wondering if they could use it as an alternate way to get barrel horses a S.I.  or earn a  R.O.M. with out having to deal with all the stress and expence of sending their horses to the track.

LOL. My gelding would KILL at this. I wouldn't. I barely have the balls to run him on the pattern, much less ask him for his all on a straight stretch. lol

Some people in SD are thinking about getting something like that put together. I would LOVE to enter my gelding. He can flat out fly! I have raced him against other 1D barrel horses and even after giving them a big head start before letting him go we flew by them like they were standing still. He makes my eyes water.

I would  be too chicken to enter but I think it would be fun to watch.  I bet some of the horses would love it too, I have a gelding that when ever trail riding always has to be in the lead, will not let another horse ahead of him.   He is a pain in the rear to pony because he is always trying to get out front.   It would be interesting to see which horses have a competitive spirit like that or if they would even catch on that they are in a race.

My gelding would absolutely LOVE this!  I keep saying that I wish we had a track nearby so that I could let him stretch out...he can fly and he loves to open up.  I think it's a great idea!

You never know what can happen on the flat. A 3D horse won it last year. My mom rode my sister ZZD mare and won the 2D. It was a good time. They have plenty of room to get slowly whoaed up. :)

My rocket mare would love it!  I wonder if she'd ever be able to slow down enough for barrels again afterward tho . .

I am probably going to be the only one here to say this but no, I would not enter my horse. There is a lot of risk involved in just running barrels, I wouldn't want to risk crippling my good horse on a straight stretch bragging contest. Maybe if I had something I really didn't feel was worth a whole lot but I knew could haul the mail, maybe then but probably not. I wouldn't want to even enter a young horse in this. Their minds are so fragile, why push anymore than you have to?

Maybe I spent too long getting my horse off the track to where he could ride by another horse without getting chargy and strong or from grabbing his ass and trying to run every time something tried to pass him on the rail.

ETA: I remember watching an interview with Sherry Cervi a while ago. She said when she was a kid she ran her pony all the time. Her dad finally told her that horses are like a pack of cigarettes. They only have some many runs before their gone.

I would attribute this to that as well. For every time you run down that stretch, that is one run you burned up out of the "pack".

I would totally do it! That would be SO MUCH FUN!!! My mare, though she is little, is fast as can be in a straight way and she doesn't like other horses to get ahead of her, so she would try with ALL her might to win. I wish we would have something like that here...maybe if we go to some omoksees, they have things like that...

Don't know if I'd have the nerve to enter or not but it would be interesting to see who won.  Like another poster said, it wouldn't necessarily the the fastest one around the barrels.  BUT I can only think of 1 arena around here with a track.

I totally agree. My trainer and I were just talking about how hard it is on them running down the track. When they ran the quarters at LA Downs, about 1/3 of the horses came out limping before the race. I have worked too hard the get the "track" out of two of mine. The first time someone's horse breaks down they are going to be saying I wish I hadn't done that. This happens more often then you think. I could race mine on the track because they certainly have the talent but I barrel race because that is the discipline that I enjoy.

I think it would be a blast! Not for every weekend or anything of course. My local saddle club had a 50 yd dash class well into the line of events for the evening. Horses were well warmed up. Me and my horse did great. My current set of horses- who knows. Looks like fun either way.

I don't think this is something I could see doing often but a couple times a year I think would be fine. And obviously a horse that wasn't in great shape shouldn't participate.

I won't do it to Brother Dave..
I'm going on year # 2~ to get him rating, after being on the track..
IMO it would "undo" all the slow work I've put into him, and for what. ..
Again.. just my opinion...............

I wouldn't enter my mare because she has enough soundness issues now, and she isn't extremely fast, but I would LOVE to watch. We were going to go to this one until we realized it was a 6 hour drive one way. We will just watch the videos that pop up. haha

I think it depends on the individual.
It would be good for one that rates way too much, that needs to be freed up. Nothing like a little competition to get them firing on all cylinders.
If I had one that was borderline a runaway....not so much. lol

Love the idea of this and wish it was closer to me. I wouldn't do it if it was the beginning of the year though! I wouldn't mind going if it was any time past july. My horse needs some good outs to get his boogering out of the way for the year! :)

I think it would be a good way to breeze your horse and would get your horse to open up and run.

Would help open and free them up on the pattern.

Just my thoughts :)

Yeah, I breeze my horse regularly - don't see how this is much different.  I breezed him ONCE against another horse, and I might be scared to do it again.  He was AAA off the track.

Totally agree, it's about the last thing I would do with my barrelhorse. I think roping, cutting, even putting on some English tack and do some jumping would be fun...but not racing hellbent down the track, just not worth it to me.

I was going to say the exact same thing.

I breeze my horse once a week to keep his lungs in sprinting shape .... why would a race be any less safe than breezing your horse? I can totally understand if you don't want to do it on a horse that is a free-runner and borderline runaway; but I don't see it as any less safe than breezing.

I'll bet their track would be way better groomed than the 2 options I have for breezing at home!
