| I tried to search this already but didn't find exactly what I was looking for.
What do you recommend for a added supplement for a horse with mild heaves or IAD?
He already is outside 24/7, we have dex and ventipulmen, he is also on forco and pasture right now. He gets soaked hay in the winter months. I am looking to give him a extra boost!

THE has PulmonEZ that is great for lung health. My gelding I am legging back up right now has a cough every spring. He drops his head to his knees and coughs about 4-5 times and is done the rest of the ride. Once I have him on PulmonEZ for about 2 weeks he stops. I don't even have to keep him on it all summer, just during the spring it seems. I'm going to have cough/breather added to his Muscle Mass for his next bag though since we have had a crazy wet May.

Where do you purchase all of this at? And can you be detailed how much you feed of each? Thanks!

Location: God's country...aka TEXAS | Oxygen 2X is great for any kind of respiratory problems. It increases lung capacity and reduces recovery time. It helps with allergies, heaves, bleeders etc. My gelding is completely off of dex because of this product. It a pellet form that you feed once a day in their grain. Also, when I run I use the OxyO2 paste which is a natural replacement for ventipulmin. I will not run without it!

Location: Alberta, Canada | I use an equi resp and steamed hay and no supplements are needed that are breathing specific :) I've also been able to cut out the dex and ventipulmin. I do send blood once a month for live blood analysis to a naturopath however and he has her on all kinds of natural immune boosters and anti inflammatories. I tried several different supplements and nothing really made a huge difference until I started using this blood guy.

Location: NE Texas | I have tried it all at one point or the other, and my horse was on some of these products when he got so sick. After three different vets, two rounds of anti-biotics, two standing scopes and one exercise scope we still had no answers or improvement. Vet prescribed 8 cc of Ventipulmin a day, along with Dexamethasone and Prednisone and nebulizer treatments, I still had a very sick horse on my hands. At resting he was so distressed to breathe he was almost panting. Even on 8 cc of Ventipulmin this horse couldn't take a deep enough breath to cough. The vets were pretty much at a loss as to how to treat further since he was unresponsive to the high levels of steroids he was on. This is a 5 YO and a very talented 5 YO, so needless to say I was pretty bummed.
This colt had lost a ton of weight, was very stiff through his body, obviously distressed through his eye, worst case of heaves i've seen. His hair coat was bad, he had dandruff all through his hair. The most unhealthy horse I have ever seen that wasn't down.
Through much research I decided to take him off of everything except feed, hay, and water and treat him with mustard. I started with 30cc of mustard for 5 days, and while he wasn't well, he did show some mild improvement. In discussion with my good friend and BB canchasr1, we began talking about Curcurmin (Turmeric) and the benefits of it when consumed by horses AND humans. She told me about her mom and sister who took it for help with the arthritis and allergies and the success they had. And a dog that was treated with it for skin allergies and cleared it up. I began researching this and found a ton of information on the benefits of the spice and then found Dr. Tom Schell and the Nouvelle Research Company, makers of the Cur-Ost supplement line. For about two weeks I consulted with Dr. Schell and he explained to me how and why these products were successful in treating chronic issues such as alleriges. He explained to me that many of these chronic issues begin with inflammation in the intestine creating "leaky gut syndrome", which then creates a hyper immune response resulting in inflammation in other areas of the body, often showing up as allergies, COPD, and other inflammatory issues. The things he explained to me made perfect sense, so after much consulting and research I decided to try his product. In 14 days I had a completely different horse. I have never seen such a dramatic change in an animal so quickly. I went from a horse who was so sick and depressed that he couldn't and wouldn't bend around to get a fly off of him to a horse who is nickering and happy and looks completely different. I went from a horse who couldnt' take a deep breath to a horse who was ready to go back into training. This product was a miracle for my horse and I will never be without it for this gelding!
The craziest change I saw in this horse is his overall well being and happiness. Since he was 6 months old, this colt has always been very flinchy when you brush him, especilly through his lower belly and back through his flank area. Even on long term ulcer treatment with Ranitidine, Omeprazole, and other gastro supplements he would back his ears and try to kick you if you brushed him or grazed him in the back cinch area. I had to take all the back cinches off of my saddles as well. After only 14 days on the Cur-Ost, he actually enjoys being brushed and isn't sensitive in the back cinch area anymore.
I could go on and on about the changes in this horse. I have owned him since he was a weanling so i've seen him change and know his personality very well. The difference in this horse physically and emotionally is the most dramatic thing I have ever seen. Like I said, I had tried many of the other well known supplements prior to this, and some of them he was on when he became so ill, along with ulcer treatment. The Cur-Ost product healed my horse from the inside out. No more Ventipulmin, no more Dex, no more nebulizers. Feed, hay, water, and Cur-Ost. That's it! The proof is in the pudding for me....see the pictures below, the first pic is March 23, the second is April 25....'nuff said. The only change during this time was the Cur-Ost. He loves it, just ask him! LOLOL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yX_k7_0_8Y

Then I backed down the just hte Total Support and the Adapt & Calm. If I have anymore flare ups, I won't hesitate to add the Immune & Repair back in, but hopefully now that we have this colt on track and his immune system and digestive tract back healthy, we won't have to do that.

| Similar issues with the cough, IAD etc
Drew blood and did allergy testing. Wowza. Allergic to most grass hays (we had just run out of our good alfalfa when the cough suddenly flared badly) corn, barley, some pollens, bugs. Life basically. At the time it was taking 5cc/day of ventipulmen to control it.
We started allergy shots about 2 weeks ago, we're almost through the 1st set and we've weaned him from 5cc to 2cc. In addition to the shots we found alfalfa for him and I changed him to triple crown complete from our pellets which has the smallest # of his allergens I could find.
He also gets oxymax for his supplement for the extra lung support and I'll likely run him on ventipulmen or oxy02 for a while

| Thank you everyone! I feel overwhelmed at the choices! Let me see if you can help narrow down some of the choices.
Price wise-what do you think is best bang for your buck?
My horse has diagnosed Inflammatory Airway Disease. The only visible symptom he has is nasal drainage (white mucus). Very random, small amounts of coughing. No heaving breathing.
Does this help anyone narrow down to a particular product?
He was on Dex and ventipulmen for months and didn't notice a huge difference honestly.

The Total Health sounds exactly what I am looking for-but it is expensive so I want to make sure it is the best option! How much did you feed a day of the Total Health?

| I went ahead and ordered the Smartpak Breath after doing a bit of research. Financially-it was a better option for the moment but loved the looks of a couple of the other products!
It is safe for me to keep using the Forco along with this?

Sorry I didn't get back with you very quickly, just checking back. I double dosed it for the first 14 days then backed off to two scoops once daily. It is expensive, but after all of the money i've spent at the vet's office and other supplements through the years trying to treat his "allergies and COPD", to now have a horse that is neither allergic nor heavey is worth it to me.
I have literally tried every product listed on this thread at one point or the other in this horse's life to help treat these allergies so as not to result in a chronic episode. He was even on some of the products listed here when he got sick. This isn't a new problem that just came about; i've been dealing with it for 5 years! This last episode got out of hand due to him not being in my care and me not being able to see first hand the severity of the symptoms. That's when I started trying to figure out the cause and how to eliminate the triggers. Once I got my horse healthy and eliminated the over-active immune response within his body, the allergies and asthmatic symptoms completely went away.
I'm now a firm believer in that most of the problems we see in our horses (and ourselves) begin in the digestive tract. I've fed Forco for years and treated for ulcers for years over and over and never had a horse respond like this horse has responded to the Cur-Ost. Yes, it cured my allergy and COPD symptoms I was dealing with in this horse but it also obviously healed his stomach and treated him from the inside out. I no longer have to buy additional supplements to treat his ulcers and hind gut issues either thanks to the Cur-Ost, so that's money ahead when I think about not having to purchase the additional supplements I kept him on before.
