Location: East Texas | We have six horses and need to do something different.
We have...
two BAW/heel horses (7-8y)
one cutter reject that turned into a pretty good youth playday horse (7y)
one decent bred pole/barrel horse that we have not raced on in a couple of yrs (9y)
one 22y pole horse
one 2D/3D jackpot/playday (16)
We want....
2 drill horses (one that could double as a reining horse for pageants?)
pole horse
barrel horse
goat horse
something for me to ride around the pasture (want one bigger than two roping horses we have. I am 6'2, 200+)
So I need ya'lls help trying to figure out what we need and which horses to keep and which to trade. I have a daughter going into 5th grade. So we are not too far off from JrH. She has no interest in roping, but loves the speed events and ties goats. My wife and daughter ride in drill, and I need something for my big but to ride around the pasture. OK, so what do I need to do? I am keeping the old pole horse to live out her days on the open range. My daughter would hate to part with her barrel horse and wants to keep him no matter what. The other 4 may need to go. I could keep the ex-cutter as a drill horse, but could prob get more for her selling as youth playday horse. So we are needing another pole and or barrel horse to compete in JrH. What kind of horse is needed to compete in TX JrH?

| two BAW/heel horses (7-8y) * SELL * or * TRADE * for a good horse for yourself one cutter reject that turned into a pretty good youth playday horse (7y) * SELL * one decent bred pole/barrel horse that we have not raced on in a couple of yrs (9y) * SELL * one 22y pole horse * KEEP * one 2D/3D jackpot/playday (16) * Is this one big enough for you to ride? If not I would sell for a solid 1D/2D horse *
2 drill horses (one that could double as a reining horse for pageants?) I would combine the purchase of a Barrel/Pole horse if you could goat horse / Would be nice If you could find an all around horse that your daughter could run barrels/poles/tie on

I agree.
If your daughter isn't riding the 16-year-old barrel horse at the bottom I would sell it. I know she wants to keep it but she's only five years old.....
Find her a nice all-around horse. |

On this topic, we are in TJHSRA region 5, and we are only a few miles from LA. You know the pros and cons of competing in either one? Looking at the times in Nacogdoches, my daughter's times would be in the top of what they are running there. Guess timer line could be in a different spot.

Like others have said, if you aren't interested in roping, sell both the breakaway/heel horses. Could the decent bred barrel horse (the 9 year old) become something your daughter could jr. rodeo on? If so, then I'd sell the 16 y/o 2d/3d horse. I'd also sell the reject cutter, because kids horses are in high demand and will pretty much always bring good money.
I think from selling those 4 horses you could probably buy 3 pretty decent ones, JMO. And if that isn't the case, then sell 5 (not the 22 y/o), and I think you could really find 3 decent horses, one for your daughter to do drills on and hopefully jr. rodeo on, one for your wife, and then one for you.
However, I don't buy and sell horses much, so I probably shouldn't be talking, LOL. |

Location: Bama | Is the 9yo something your daughter could handle? Would it be worth it to get him/her going again? Would it be suitable for drill, barrels, poles, and goats? From the info given, I'd keep the 9yo if your daughter could handle him/her. I'd probably let the others go and buy two that could do a couple different jobs. You could always sell the 9yo down the road and get something faster if needed. Good luck! |

Location: East Texas | thanks for the ideas... I think either way we need to get the 9y running the pattern in both poles and barrels. We are currently riding him in drill this summer. I am going to take him to the arena tomorrow and see what happens. We got him and the older barrel horse about the same time and my daughter just fell in love with the paint and has just been riding him. |
