Does anyone have any experience with a 30 day altrenogest shot from BET Pharm? I have a mare that has really bad heat cycles. She bumps her hip on anything she can (stall, fence, trailer, etc). Driving down the road she will rock the whole rig with her bumping and when in her stall she makes the whole barn move! She is constantly winking and peeing (or attemtping to). But the real reason I am wanting to put her on something to keep her from coming into heat is because it effects her performance. She get extremely sensitive, not focused, and doesn't sit down for her turns like she should. I don't want to spend $250 for Regumate and have to give that to her everyday so I am looking for alternatives. I came across http://www.betpharm.com/micro.htm and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it. Price and effectiveness?

Any other options? My vet does not recommend a marble. Raspberry leaves don't help enough. I will not spay her.

I tried a shot from a compounding pharmacy for my mare with ovary issues. I didn't get the results I was hoping for. I believe the one I tried was supposed to be given every 3 weeks. She was cycling through the shot and standing at random intervals, first time at 2 weeks after the shot, then a week after that. I shortened up the time between shots per vet recommendation and still was not keeping her from coming in. I tried that for a couple months and finally gave up and started her on Regumate. It actually wasn't as big of a pain as I thought it might be. I just squirted it in her grain each morning. I was very pleased with the results I got from this.

It's been quite a few years ago now, but I had a broodmare that needed Regumate to stay in foal. We opted to use a compounded shot that was to be given weekly since she was out in the pasture. That poor mare got large knots from each injection site that never went away. Not sure if this is something common with injections like this, but you might check with your vet.

I haven't used the 30 day, but I use the 12 day from BET. I love the product, it is very effective and works great. I have heard the 30 day doesnt work as well, but I have no knowledge of that myself.  I have been a BET customer for many years.

A bottle of Regumate should last me around 3 months right? My mare is around 1,000lbs so I would be giving her roughly 9mls a day. So that would actually be closer to 4 months. Am I correct on this?

Also....do the horses seem to eat it just fine? Or does it take them awhile to get use to it? I would rather just stick it in her feed than syringe it to her due to the mess and I already have to syringe her ulcer meds so I am sure she is getting tired of me sticking something in her mouth everyday...lol. She is a good girl and doesn't mind but I would just love to not have to every single day.

I don't know about the 30 day shot, but I give a weekly altrenogest shot.
Seems like the bottle is $150 and I give 3CC a week. The worst part is remembering to give it. Which reminds me I forgot to give it last night. Lol

I would probably just give the recommended 10ml, but since you wouldn't be doing it to maintain a pregnancy you could try the 9ml and up it if that didn't seem to be enough. Also, you can look into the generic Regumate to see if you can get it forms better price. My vet carries both because some people want the regular and others would rather save money and use the generic. I've used both and haven't noticed a difference.

I think it must be tasteless, because I have never had a problem with one not wanting to swallow it. With the mare that was having ovary issues, I squirted it in her grain and she never even acted like she knew it was there. The broodmares are turned out in a pasture, so we walk out and syringe into their mouths each morning. They let us walk right up and give it without putting a halter on. Even the mare thst will fight oral meds stands there like it's no big deal.

I have never used the Long Acting 30 day - only the 12 day and that is very effective.

I used the 30 day shot for only 2 months last year. It worked for me. My mare just kind of checked out while in heat so I wanted to try something. No change in the way she ate, just kept her from cycling

My horse is on the 12 day shots and they work great! I actually give them at 11 1/2 days. If I wait longer than that, she will begin showing signs of heat. I had her checked and everything inside was normal. Her heat cycles were horrendous and she's great now. She does get a little crankier as she gets close to her needing her shot, but it's nothing like before. The 30 day shot (as far as my vet told me) comes with a huge shipping charge, so the 7 dose vial is a more economical way to go.
