Is there anyone else out there dealing with black dirt/mud? If you are - I'm sorry! With all this rain it's just terrible. I can deal with it on her body (have to get the water hose and slowly wash it out - takes about an hour each time I want to ride!), but it balls up in her mane and tail and you just cannot get it out..... if you use water it takes forever to get them down small enough to then detangle the hair. A friend of mine said wait until they dry and then crush them with pliers???? So if I want to take her to a show I just leave the mud balls as decorations and wait for them to dry so I can crush them?? lol.... what is everyone else doing?

Only way I can get it out of mine is by washing it. I like doing it that way then I am not pulling out there mane or tail.. I know it takes forever but then I keep it braided and its easier to get out afterwards then and does not tangle it up as much.
I hate having this black mud its awful at my house!!

LOL, thats funny but not really about the leaving the mud balls for decorations, I know the black dirt mud is a pain to deal with I have dealt with it a few times and really theres not much you can do about it but dealing with it the way you are now, that black mud is nasty and sticky stuff, but its better then that red dirt mud that stains everything.
I 'm lucky I have sandy type ground so I dont have to fight with any mud like what you got.
Maybe leave a mane and tail condtioner in after you wash your horse mane and tail out, maybe the next clean up wont be so bad.

I tried the braided tail thing and it actually wadded up and was worse. Maybe a tail bag at least for the tail. Idk. Guess there is no miracle fix - just good old elbow grease. Ugh. lol

if its soft I will hose it out or put conditioner on.. work on it.. then hose it out. If its already dried I try brushing it out and if its too bad I will try and crack the mud balls with my hands and pull the hairs out without breaking them. It's just a pain.. LOL

Try putting some cowboy magic detangler and shine in the next time you wash her.  I don't know if that will help, but the "slickiness" of that product keeps cuckle burrs from being a huge issue at my house.  And yes, a tail bag would be a definitely plus i'd say as well at this point.  I don't envy your black dirt at all!  We are more sandy, thank goodness!

I've tried putting quite a bit of show sheen in it after a bath so that when she does roll again it's not as bad. That did help some - but it's sure a lot of work to waller around in the mud with a water hose trying to get her clean only for her to look exactly the same next feeding time! lol

I have the black dirt/mud. If the mud balls have already dried then I take pliers and crush them.  Just be careful not to let the hair/mud ball get down where the cutting part of the pliers are.... they will cut a chunk of mane off if your not careful....
Cowboy magic works good if they are smaller and still some what soft.

TotalP - you are genius!

"Get some Laser Sheen for after you get her washed and saturate her mane and tail with it. It is a concentrate so you actually get a gallon out of one bottle. One ounce per quart of water. I put it in a spray bottle. This will allow you get her mane and tail combed out with pulling on it."

^^^^ never would have thought of this and makes sense! Woman are smarter than men! lol

I grew up in that black gumbo and my sister and I just used a pair of pliers when they were dried out, but it was a constant battle.  I wouldn't wish that dirt on my worst enemy!

It's not hard to ride a dirty horse.... but.... I always liked cleaning one up... (only to watch it roll in the dirt when I was done)

White vinegar...you can get it at dollar general in a jug I usually buy a couple at a time...you'll want to wash with shampoo first then soak or saturate with the vinegar..i like to put tails in a bucket with 100% vinegar and hold it for a minute or two then rinse and repeat...and whatever left in the bucket I use on body or mane...it's actually good for the hair but it will help a lot with staining...i use conditioner heavily after just to help get rid of the vinegar odor but also it helps reseal the hair so if they get dirty again it comes out easier....works great on red dirt black dirt or urine staining too...

Not sure if it's the same, but Iowa mud is Black, and my light palomino happens to LOVE to roll in mud. I usually wait til he's dry and curry his body, the brush, then curry some more otherwise he'd need a daily bath just to get all the mud off! For his mane and tail, they get those big hard clumps of mud, I can usually pull them out with my fingers if they're not rock hard, and slide them off the hair. If it's still wet muddy clumps, rinse and pull them out with a rag. When I'm lazy I just soak their mane with detaingler, and comb it out with a tail brush. Hope this helps, maybe our mud clumps are completely different, lol

I would say a slinky but since it is getting hot I think a fly sheet with the neck part that goes up to their r ears. My made rolls a flip over in hers and that sucker stays put. I have an Amigo Mio Fly Rug. Tough little sucker. Also keeps them from fading

My horse is a mess right now and his mane has all those hard mud balls dangling off of it. I will be giving him a bath with EzAll tomorrow and I'll let you know how that works.
