Location: Oregon | I got a job at a clinic that is being built in Houston near the NRG Stadium. I'll be in Dallas for training for about a month and then will be moving. My horse will stay with my parents in Oregon until I get settled and have a place for her. Does anyone know of any good places to board? My horse can't be turned out with other horses and I like to ride daily if possible so I'd be looking for either a stall or pen with shelter and some sort of riding arena. I'd also love information on the barrel racing scene and maybe a good vet to use. Thanks in advance! |

Location: Texas | I think BVEH or the vets at A&M is who most everyone uses for their vet. As for barrel racing I know theres a big arena in san antonio for big events ad the brazos county expo center (i think) is in Bryan.. |

Location: Texas | There's TONS of boarding options. you would be surprised how many stables there are in the Houston area. It depends on where you want to settle down and how much you want to pay in rent. Sugar Land Stables has single horse turn out and a covered arena. There's a lot of english barns in the houston area too.. I would check craigslist also.
As far as vets, again, theres a ton just depends on where you are at.
Dr. Danny Dutton of ESMS Houston Field Medicine sees the entire area. He's 100% mobile and has all the diagnostic equipment you would need. I use him for most things and go to BVEH for things that I can't. I use BVEH for repro too.
There's also Katy Equine, Waller Equine, BVEH Navasota, Texas Equine Hospital in Bryan (Dr. Honnas), TAMU, Dr. Knape, and I know I am forgetting some. Granada Farms in Wheelock also for repro work.

| I live just west of Houston in Sealy. We have several great vets in the metroplex area. If you live close to your work, Dr. Ford is in that area, I drive to Waller to Collier Vet Clinic ans use Matt Randall, I have several friends who live in souteast Houston who drive to his clinic. A lot drive to College Station to use A&M or Dr. Honnas, BVEH is good too. We barrel race year round, you will have your choice of 2 or 3 races within an hour, hour and half drive on the weekends and several jackpots on weeknights. Because of the heat, in the summer most jackpots are in the evenings. Most producers let you pre-enter on line and pay when you get there, very accomodating to the riders. A weekend jackpot will draw 150 - 200, more is added money, weeknight 75- 100 depending on where it is. Cowboysportsnews.com is a good source for listing of races although not all are in this area so it may not mean much to you if you don't know the locations of the arenas. I don't have any info on borading. Cowboysportsnews might have some listings or look on craigslist.Congratulations on your job and welcome to Houston! |

Bring a boat and some floaties.
You will have to have a boat to get moved in and hip waders for feeding and saddling. Think of it this way, you won't have to pay to swim your horse. |

Location: Golden Gulf Coast of Texas | Probably be best to find out what part of town you are going to live in. I would suggest Manvel area if you don't want more than A 30-45 minute drive to work. That's south on Hwy 288. Traffic is gonna be bad unless you work really early. Tons of vets but I go to Dr Marty Tanner in Elgin for any Lameness issues. Dr Honnas in Bryan for anything else. Plenty of barrel races every weekend. |

Location: southeast Texas | Bringing a horse from a less humid area to Houston, give your horse lots of time to get adjusted to the heat and humidity. The fall would be a good time to transport your horse down here. It would give them all fall winter and spring to get used to the weather down here.

| "Gulf Coast Barrel Racing Association 2015" has a Facebook page. I "think" I have seen boarding ads on there before. If not, you might could ask for some info from some of their members.

Location: Oregon | Little update, I got an apartment in nw houston between I45 and hwy 249. I plan on moving my things over there this weekend and I am still in search of a place to keep my horse (just one) in the nw houston/cypress area or close by. Does anyone have any ideas of some places to board in that area. I've heard that theres TONS of boarding but it seems like most aren't advertised online. |

Location: Oregon | Yay! I'm glad to hear that! I've been google searching in houston so maybe that'll show more places lol and yes, I've been looking on craigslist but want decent footing and in the pictures I've seen the ground looks really hard. I'm going to keep looking there though  |

Location: Kentucky | I lived in the medical center in Houston for 4 years while I went to med school and at one point lived right by Hermann Park off 288 close to NRG. I boarded my horse at Star of Texas Stables in Friendswood. The owner's daughter runs barrels and there were a couple girls that boarded there that lived in the med center and ran barrels, so it's definitely a western barn. At that time, they were just opening, and board was reasonably affordable. I think at this point it may have gone up. It is a nice barn.. they have a little covered arena and a little outdoor riding area that was good enough for me to at least keep him in shape. The barn itself is super nice and I thought my boy was well taken care of. I would check them out.
If you have any questions about living in that area of Houston or anything let me know! I lived in the med center, in West Kirby, and in the Heights during my time there and actually just moved 2 months ago. So many of my favorite restaurants are there! I am surprised to say that I miss it!
