Location: taking the road less traveled... | Has anyone ever had successful treatment that didn't cost an arm and leg ? I know the omeprazole does not work. He is a very picky eater and strange smelling anything added to his feed and he won't touch it or he will eat around it and leave it in the bucket. He stays up at night and is out during the day. If he can see any horses out he wants out with them and wing finish his feed. What types of treatments actually work? Preferably one that you don't have to mix with feed? Also what types of feed work best and which ones to stay away from? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks ! |

| I just started a product called Redmond Daily Gold. It is a bentonite clay based supplement and you mix 2 ounces a day with their feed. I also have a picky eater that usually can smell a feed change a mile away! He INHALED this stuff from day one. It is mined back east and is basically in its natural state and put into a bag. It costs about 15.00 for a 40 day supply so very inexpensive. It coats and protects the entire GI tract from mouth to hind end from what I understand. I even put some on my tongue just to see what it was like and it tastes like DIRT. lol Nothing weird, so maybe thats why he eats it. I add a little water to my grain so it will stick but thats about it.. Something to try anyway and its Cheap , I am sure THE people will recommend Gastro plus. I have heard good about it, but 15.00 is more in my budget than 100.00+ for a month supply. |

THE GastroPLUS does work. It is one of the few that can be fed to heal hind gut. But if your horse is picky, this does have a strong smell. My advice would be to mix with a dab of water in an oral syringe and syringe it to him every day. A 32 dose bag will do wonders and is $115.95 shipped if purchased through me. |

I haven't used it, but have used green clay with success, but the more I am reading green clay is suppose to be the least effective.
Bentonite (sp) clay is supposed to be one of the better, and I believe this is what Redmond uses.
I give one tablespoon daily when I suspect.
Sorry I do add it in with their food, I do start gradually with my finicky eaters.
Also look at their diet, low NSC, high fat will help heal the hind gut

Location: Nowhere Land | try putting some Molasses and hot water in a spray bottle and spray whatever it is you're feeding the horse a little .. that has worked for many picky eaters I know. Also, If that doesnt work you can put the meds/supplement in a oral syringe with some warm water and apple sauce and shake it up, then dispense that way. I used Ranitadine OTC 16 pills 3x a day for a horse here with Chronic intestinal Inflammation and Ulcers in the Hind gut. Hes on it for life. (this was a severe case) Another mare I had on it for about 8 months and seemed to heal everything she had going on, she scoped clean after, and now on a simple preventative supplement. She was on 16 pills 2x a day. The pills you can buy Generic Over the counter (human) PM me for more info. Hope this helps you, I know not everyone has had success with this, but I have. |

So they also told you to change your husbandry practices also to help deal with the hind hit issues then?
There's really nothing out there for hind gut that isn't feed through. EquiShure. GastroPLUS. Succeed. Even ProBios is feed through. |

My colt was pacing and kind of eating dirt once in a while. Started him last week, and he is CALM. When he is not eating instead of pacing he is standing. He is CLEANING UP his feed and seems great. Its 15 bucks so im happy. I am running him saturday so I will see if he runs any different. |

Location: Sunny So Cal | You can put GastroPLUS in a syringe with some water and tube him with it like back when THE was fasting. Have you tried giving him a bran mash with carrots and apples in it to get him to eat things he is picky about eating? I can usually mask anything in bran with my picky eater. I end up using apple juice as the liquid and grate carrots and apples up and put them in there. But now the store sells the carrots already grated so it saves me some time. Good Luck with your picky eater. |

Location: Valley City,ND | Sucralfate 1 gram per 100lbs every 8 hours. So if horse weighs 1200lbs then 12 tablets three times a day. 21 day supply is $150. Can put tabs in alittle warm water (about 60ml) , the tabs dissolve quickly, n use oral dose syringe. |

I do love the mineral end of this product as I have tried every mineral on the market and have never been happy with results but I am with this product. |

If your horse is having gas, my guess he is getting too many fermentable foods causing a ph shift in the hind gut causing gas.

I very much agree and started feeding Redmonds salt last summer. My horses love it. They actually prefer the blocks so may have to switch back to those. I just don't see ulcers being healed for $15. I had a recent talk with my vet about what it costs to heal ANYTHING horse related. Funny conversation! |

| I starting feeding daily gold about a year ago. After about a month in to it I have completely stopped omeprozole on my ulcer prone horse who was on it quite frequently for 6 months. I give him a stomach buffer before I travel and that's all. He is now off Lasix also because he's quiet at races now. . Is it a cure all? No but I have used it on over 50 head of horse and it has really helped with getting the intestinal tract back in balance. I have had zero colics since feeding it and I have more then 30 to 50 head at a time on it. I have reduced feed and other supplements also. |

I don't think it can heal. From what I understand after talking with a few holistic vets is that the benonite clay should only ever be used as a maintenance like buffer, not a full treatment. |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | Main goal with colon ulcers is to increase mucous production so that the ulcerated spot can heal, and to feed things that pass through easily so that that it doesn't irritate the ulcerated spots. The mucous in the intestine helps to protect the lining of the colon (and any damaged spots) and it helps food slide through.
Flax is good to feed because it goes through the digestive tract easily and it's almost slimy when it gets wet. Same concept with omega oils.
Herbs like Marshmallow (sp??) and others have the same effect and some actually help the gut to produce more mucous. Horse Power herbs has a good supplement for that.
Also, I found that non-molassas beet pulp, molasses, and joint supplements including MSM caused mine to go off his feed..I had to feed straight grains, alfalfa, and a non-molasses based all round supplement.
If your horse is a picky eater his appetite will tell you what works better than anybody. |

| Honestly, hind gut ulcers are exceedingly difficult to diagnose, and usually the animals are in terrible near death condition before they're found. The very best thing that you can do is examine your overall feeding program. Make sure that you are providing 24/7 hay in a net. They must have full time access to forage. I have straightened so many of these suckers out it's amazing, and nevertoold has really helped me a lot, as well as tons of consultation with several good vets here in Texas! If the horse was mine I would:
1. Get the hay net out. Put grass hay in it. Hang the net where the horse can get it. Keep the net full at all times.
2. Throw away the grain. Any grain. All grain. No grain!
3. Provide 3-6 lbs quality (ie, no molasses as a binder, only bentonite) alfalfa pellets or cubes twice daily.
4. Provide 1-2 lbs good quality rice bran twice daily, (Renew Gold is good, Mannapro Glo products are excellent).
5. a) In the rice bran, mix: Full scoop of Forco, twice daily. b)The full dose of Equishure (Hind gut buffer), twice daily. c)SmartGI Ultra, twice daily.
6. For 10 days, I would give: 1 full tube of Ulcergard daily.
7. For 10 days, I would give: 1/2 tube ProBios Equine Gel, twice daily.
8. For 10 days, I would give: A good electrolyte paste as directed on the label.
Hind gut ulcers are actually very rare, though acidosis is NOT rare. It causes all the symptoms of hind gut ulcers: The drawn up look, the smelly poop, the poor appetite, etc., etc. The key here is to reduce the acid being produced in the foregut while re-establishing a healthy gut flora. The poor bugs get completely overwhelmed in an acidic environment and croak. You've got to replace them while giving them a nice healthy pH to play in, while feeding them nice things like Forco. The feed change, with a higher alfalfa intake, high hay intake, and the good fats and carbs from the rice bran, helps to have the foregut in a happy place when it comes off the Ulcergard. The SmartGI Ultra is perfect to help keep things ticking after the large numbers of bugs stop coming in from your Gel. The electrolyte paste helps your horse drink enough to provide the moisture needed to get healthy gut action moving again.
Any time any of mine get picky, my radar goes off, and they get the full treatment I listed above.

I like your post, very good advice. My only concern is why the alfalfa pellets vs alfalfa hay. When you listen to the nutritionist they all say try to keep the long stem.
I know in some places you can't get the hay and that to me would be the second best option...pellets.
I have a bag on hand at all times.
My horses are looking great off of grains, Renew Gold and thanks be to God a green pasture after 9 years of not having a pasture! |

No particular reason, it's just hard for me to get and store, so it doesn't cross my mind anymore. Nothing better than a load of fresh alfalfa hay! Wish I could get it, I'd feed it straight. Oh in a perfect world...
