Location: Pacific Northwest | You don't have to switch anything if you want Netflix. You just go to Netflix.com and sign up, you get your first month free :) You can log in to your netflix anywhere that you have internet...on your phone, laptop, desktop, Wii, Xbox 360, etc.
Netflix has a "kids" option where it will only allow them to access kid-friendly titles.
ETA it has movies, TV episodes, documentaries, etc.

Location: Pacific Northwest | You might. Whatever TV has the Wii hooked up to it is the one you'd be able to watch Netflix on. There are some "smart" TVs now that come with a Netflix "app" built into them.
On our TV we just play it through the Wii or Xbox 360 but I honestly watch it on my laptop and phone the most. |

You'll log into it on the Wii :) My brother is who did the initial set up, but I think you download it like you would an app on your phone. There should be a "shop" of some sort on the Wii menu where you can search and download things, so you would go to the Shop and then search Netflix and download it (which is free). Once its downloaded you just log in with the email/password you signed up with.

Location: In The Snow, AZ | Just wanted to chime in and say, there's a thing called Roku, it is something you plug in to your TV. It ran us $30 I believe at best buy. It allows you to access Netflix, Vudu, Blockbuster, Amazon, etc. Granted, you still have to sign up, but that way you wouldn't need a 2nd Wii or Xbox. |

You do need internet connection in order to use both, I use a roku. |

Location: North Dakota | I'm gonna be the odd one out...I would not recommend switching from cable to netflix. Maybe adding netflix but not only having that. I kinda hate netflix. While they have lots of shows, they only have extremely old or extremely obscure shows and movies. For example, I love Bob's Burgers. It took them almost 2 years to update the third season. In the time it took them to upload that they made 2 more seasons. If you rely only on that, you can't watch the news, they don't have a single disney movie on there, they don't have most currently popular cartoons. The only thing it's good for is obscure documentaries and catching up on OLD TV shows (like, early 2000's). |

I agree with you so you are not the only odd man out :) But if you have a device to stream through and internet, you have lots of options.

| It sounds like her internet may be bundled with her Dish service. IF that's the case, you'd have to get some internet service from somewhere. |

Location: That part of Texas | I "broke up" with Directv almost 2 years ago and I honestly really don't miss it. It takes a combination of different accounts/apps to cover most of your bases but I spend about $20 a month to have those things versus my old satellite bill of about $120.
I actually don't watch my tv much anymore -- just to catch the local news and weather if needed. I use my Kindle to access my "tv" accounts and I use Amazon Prime and HuluPlus as my main two. I've found that between these two, I can get almost everything that I need and they have more combined than Netflix so I cancelled my subscription to that.
Amazon Prime gives you Amazon Video that has many free movies and tv shows that you can watch. If you want to view some of the newer seasons, you can pay to watch those and you can purchase many of them for $20 per season. Huluplus allows me to watch other new shows/seasons without having to pay for them through Amazon Video and it runs $10 per month and also has movies you can watch. My nieces and nephews love Huluplus because they can watch cartoons like Spongebob and others on it without commercials and having to wait for it to come on the satellite.
If you have a tablet, you can download these apps to it without it costing anything. You can try Huluplus for free for either a week or a month to see if you like it. I pay for Amazon Prime each year so my Amazon video comes with it and it's just an added bonus for what I've always used it for.
You can buy different types of connection devices such as a Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Firestick, Wii and other things to connect your tv to the internet to access these or you can use a tablet or smartphone to also do it. Your best bet may be to visit your local Best Buy or other electronics store to talk to them about the different devices you can use to get your specific house connected.
I actually will probably never buy another tv (and if so a very small one) because I watch everything on my Kindle Fire and have no need to have a massive flat screen now. I love being able to just walk from my bed to the kitchen, do laundry and even the dishes without having to pause watching a show because I just take my Kindle along. I also love being able to get completely under the covers in the winter and watch stuff without freezing my butt off because the "tv" comes with me there in my Kindle and I don't have to watch it on the wall. |

We haven't had regular tv for over 5 years. I just finished the 3rd season of "prison break" and had just watched the series "Lost" just before that. They were both new to me. |

Location: Texas | We went for a few years with only netflix and the 4 basic channels in our area. We have cable now, and I end up watching netflix most of the time anyway.
Granted it doesn't always have the movies you want to see, but I have come across some pretty good movies that I had never heard of. The only reason I watched them was because it kind of looked interesting. Granted I LOVE documentaries, and I HATE commercials lol, so netflix is right up my alley.
If you pay for the option that you can have movies sent to your house, there is a larger selection of movies. For instance when Secretariat came out, it hadn't been out long when I could have netflix send me the movie. A lot of times the really popular movies are for dvd only, you can't watch them instantly.
I love the movie option and we may be getting that plan again. All you do is add movies to your list, they send you a certain amount of movies at a time (you choose how many when picking your plan), when you are done you mail them back. As soon as they get them they send the next 2 or 3 movies on your list. They are also pretty fast about sending you movies. Or they were a few years ago anyway.
We are horrible about renting movies and not returning them forever because we forget, or don't have time to go back to the store or whatever. With netflix there isn't (or at least there wasn't when I was doing it) a late fee... You just don't get any more movies until you return the movies you have. Plus we always had time to walk to the mailbox lol. |

| If you don't have cable, how do you watch the NFR? It's just 1x a year, but I sure do like forward to watching it - I watch the whole thing, not just the barrel racing. |

I watch a lot more of it now in person since I'm saving so much money by not having a $100+ satellite bill and can afford to go to Vegas for a few days. For the other days, I crash at my Dad's house or somebody else's who has it recorded. |

Location: the end of the rainbow | We got rid of directv a while ago and got Roku's for all of our tvs. Even my mother in law who isnt tech savvy but watches a lot of tv is good with it. You just plug the roku device into your tv and use the remote to connect it to your wifi. There are many free streaming chanels you can access with the roku, including several that give us local news access. We have our amazon prime tv., I pay for hulu, which has a lot of tv and movies and we pay for a couple of other streaming chanels for my MIL & hubby. she likes halmark movie type stuff and he likes the history channel stuff. Total cost now is about $30 per month instead of the $150 that directv wanted to up our bill to and neither one of them have complained about the change so I don't guess they miss directv that much. |
