| Will Carfax show where a vehicle was originally purchased? Like what dealership it originally came from? |

| It will show owners. However , get the vin and call any dealer and they can give you a vehicle history report. They will often times have more info than car fax. Car fax is kind of like equistat, only as good as what gets reported. |

^^^Exactly that. Carfax is great, but on one of my cars, the person who had it before me owned it since new, and she either wanted to add her husbands name or take it off the title (I think take it off) and it showed it was sold and she was the second owner, when that really didn't happen.
So, there is a lot of stuff that does NOT get reported to Carfax. And while I can understand wanting the history of a car, it isn't always all inclusive. Like me, I don't hardly ever go to the dealership to get my car serviced. To someone else who mentioned body shops report, they don't, only if there is an insurance claim on the vehicle will an accident be reported. |

Nope. Not all body shops report to car fax. I know that the shop my husband works for does not.
I learned that Car Fax is pretty much useless. In my opinion it is a scam. We went and looked at a Dodge once, at a 5 star dealership that had a clean Car Fax recor and supposedly passed their certification process. We drove 7 hours to go look at it. When we got there, the u-joints were bent AND the whole right fender and door was full of bondo, I mean it was like who ever did the repair didn't even try to hammer out the dents, just spread an inch of mud on, covered it in paint and replaced the fender liner. My husband said the fender was so bad they should have replaced it. We told the dealership and the salesman argued that the truck had never been in a wreck because the Car Fax was clean. Hubby tried to explain and show the salesman, eventually they pulled the truck into the shop and pulled the fender liner. The underside of that fender wasn't even close to straight!
Someone mentioned only if there is an insurance claim will it be reported to Car Fax. That is not true either. Again, not all insurance agencies report. Triple A does not, State Farm does not, Gieco does not, those are just the big companies I can think of off the top of my head that my husband has told me do not report.

I totally agree...Carfax is only useful if you see bad info on it and decide not to get the vehicle. If it does NOT have bad info...well...all that means is nothing bad got reported...not that it didn't happen.

| Not sure about this one, but autocheck.com is another website to use. Like I said, not sure how they compare, but a lot of dealers use this site instead of Carfax. |

Location: SE KS | Carfax is a pain in the a##!!!! Plus it is an expense, that the "cost of doing business" phrase just doesn't quite cover!!!!!!
That said, it has helped me track down paperwork needed on vehicles we have had on our lot, it's one of those "if you know how to read it" you can surmise some information!!!! |

I work for a large car auction. We use AutoCheck and don't even recognize CarFax. |

Location: south central usa | all the autocheck reports i have seen showed a very limited amount of information and detail. not saying that carfax is awesome, but in my experiences it is better. all reports are only as good as the information that is reported.
a carfax will show the original dealer and any subsequent dealers with dates and mileage...(will show location of private owners but not names)
PM me, if needed i can run a carfax with a license plate # for free (VIN costs me more and plate numbers are free)
