Location: Big Sky Country | So I have had my horse insured with Markel for 8 years. I have never collected a dime from them. My horse colicked once (non surgical) and this last year he had a small tear in his suspensery, Now I get a letter saying if ANYTHING happens to that leg he is not covered for anything. Is that normal or do I need to shop around? He is a 14 year old barrel horse and has returned to competition. Who do you use? Thanks |

That's normal. In my experience with horse insurance you pay a ton in and they do anything in their power to get out of paying. Unless it is a cut and dry death, or an injury happens early on when you just get insurance, you will be money a head to save that insurance money in the bank and use it for a vet payment or to buy a replacement horse. This is my thought unless it is a horse of very high value $20k plus and winning every barrel race in sight or a standing stallion/proven producing broodmare. |

Ditto, we carried mortality on 6 horses, all 20K plus and more in price range, and after paying for several years we dropped it when we reached the point that the cost of the insurance equaled the cost to replace one of the horses. Now if a freak accident happened that we lost all the horses we would have been in a different boat.

| I just had that freak accident and so happy I had insurance... I wont be without it again! Part of having insurance is also having a good agent that will stand by you and question the insurance companies! I am a licensed insurance agent myself so I shopped not only insurance companies, but agents as well. (Since equine insurance is not my specialty I went to another agent). Every insurance company is different and it is perfectly acceptable for you to call your agent and question this.
I questioned having insurance as my policy expired in Nov. I thought, well I can just save the money. My 2 y/o filly was going to training this summer so I thought I'll get insurance again just in case. My insurance was eff 6/1 - my filly got kicked in the shoulder on 6/4 and fractured her elbow bone which required surgery. I have had no issues with the insurance company and they more than accommodated me (they will investigate to make sure I didnt wait for insurance to be effective, but that is totally expected). I am sure after she is healed and the claim is closed they will add an exclusion for the future, but my case is more extreme than a small tear. |
