| What would your honest opinion be about a horse out of a Chick Beduino mare, by Corona Cartel. What would a young gelding of that breeding be worth as a prospect?

Location: NE Texas | Considering he's a gelding, that hurts him in my opinion. If he were a filly I think he'd be worth more simply because you could justify breeding her, especially if she's run out some money. Unless he was already broke and showing potential, it's hard to tell. There's an own son of First Down Dash out of the great mare Chicks A Blazin on Facebook right now. The colt sold for $175,000 as a yearling, and I saw him listed for the first time at $9000, then yesterday again for $7500. I'd say an own get of Corona Cartel wouldn't be much different.

Don't ya hate that.... I wish the mare's would come up for sale like that!!!! But Herbie is right, it's based on what the gelding is (conformation, temperament, etc), knows, and has done. |

| Thanks for the inputs. He is a looker with chrome and currently being finished to be VERY very broke before going anywhere near the pattern. Conformation wise, I am thoroughly impressed. I wish he was a mare too, but then again I wouldn't be able to afford him! Last I saw, the stud fee for Corona Cartel was over $35,000! That horse racing deal is a whole different world, ain't it!?
I was just curious if anyone had any working knowledge of own get of CC, or the cross between a daughter of Chicks Beduino and CC.
Thanks everyone. |

Royal breeding makes no difference on a gelding after they're too old to futurity. JMO. (I've had some insanely well bred ones). I'd love to have a CC daughter, but a gelding over 4....it's not going to matter. He's going to have to prove his worth on his own performance alone.

| As yearlings they are worth about $75,000. Once they are racing age it depends on what they have done. A 3 or 4 year old with no record is worth about $3,500-$5,000. One started on barrels and showing promise with videos to prove it, probably around $7,000-$10,000. Basically they are priced just like any other well bred green horse. |

| I watched about 7 horses go through the sale in Lufkin this weekend bred similar. They were mainly 3 yr olds that were halter broke, sound, sane....had been turned out for a while. Mares and studs....brought anywhere from $1500 to $2300. I feel like they were a pretty good deal! Problem was most people in attendance were there to buy cow ponies and ranch geldings. I dont have time for a 3 yr old or I would have tried to snag one up! They also sold a 2/3 sister to Ima Nonstop Fame..she was dark grey, but had a healing wound on her back left. I didnt get to see what she brought.

| I have seen 3 super tough CC bred horses running barrels. They have won a lot because they have so much speed. A couple of them run by barrels and make sloppy runs but they are still fast. I have seen a BUNCH of the CC's that are extremely difficult to do anything with. Some of them started out on barrels looking like future rock stars but when they get out of the high lope, they lose it. I have also encountered some of them that are just flat out mean. Beduino's don't have a great reputation either. Most are hot too. |

Location: NE Texas | I own a 4 YO grand daughter of Corona Cartel out of a Dashing Cleat bred mare that is making a really nice horse and that we've recently offered for sale. She was entered for the first time last week on her first run outdoors and won the 3D and still very green. She's got a headful of sense, is beautiful to look at, and going to make someone an outstanding rodeo horse in the long run. She is very turny actually, which isn't what one would think a horse bred like her would be, but all of my running bred colts have been more on the turny side. I'd definitely try another CC bred colt if the price was right!

While all those babies are clearly racebreds, they are grandsons (though the dam side is more comparable to the horse the OP mentions). However when it comes to prices, even on a gelding, that CC own son is going to bring a minimum of a couple thousand more than 1500 on pedi alone so long as he's sound. Since a couple thousand can throw off some people's budget, I think its important to note the difference. Grandson/own son can also be important because a lot of CC own sons and daughters are great track horses and don't make great barrel horses. More grandsons/grand-daughters turn into barrel horses.
To the OP, I love racebreds personally but some are better in a straight line than they are in a turn. Based on that, I have the opinion that you just have to take them on a case by case basis. Some will make great barrel horses; some won't. Most of them are worth at least trying. Often a grandson or granddaughter can do a better job if their pedigree is balanced with a more recognized barrel line somewhere. You would just have to ride the horse to see if he had the athleticism and mind to make a barrel horse. |

I agree with you. I just thought I would share my experience from the sale I attended over the weekend since the horses the OP mentioned are in their pedigree. |

| Thanks everyone. I am very excited about the mind on this gelding. He seems to be an exception to the "track minds" I have ridden before. I was just curious as to what my time into him would lead to if I did resale after he was patterned. He is currently in the branding pen and learning to be a work horse, first and foremost.
I am not into the futurity world. I pro rodeo and jackpot most often, so age plays less of part. Especially being in CA, where futurities are almost non-existent, the value of horses goes most on performance and less on potential futurity ability.
I thank you all for your honest opinions. I would assume not as many own sons/daughters make it into the barrel world, that is in comparison to grandsons/granddaughters, due to the success they normally have on the track and the whooping $35K+ stud fee (WOWZA!). I did see where (and someone mentioned this above) many of these horses go for $50-$125k as yearlings in the race track auctions. That is insane. Definitely a whole different world.
I am excited. He is gorgeous, good minded, and has papers to boot, but for now I will treat him like any other prospect and start from square one. |

She's awesome, bought her OTT as a non-performer for $3000. That sucker can LOPE and outrun most horses. Heck yes, I'd consider that a good prospect. Worth? as a prospect? Maybe $3500, but give it 6 months training, your friends will be jealous. I wouldn't take $20,000 for mine, now...ok. yes I would, and she is worth every penny. LOL

Location: Missouri | Not that I know anything about pedigrees, but that's a lot of Chicks Beduino. Let us know how it works out! I liked one bred similarly enough to breed my mare to him (http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/sizzlin+red+corona). I'm expecting something on the hotter side, but I don't mind going slow for a while... Good luck! |
