I recently bought a colt that goes back to Impressive bred. On the back of his papers it has HYPP results n/n. Does that mean that the breeder had him tested when they sent the registration in? Or did his dam test negative so the testing wasn't required?

It could be both. Once the mare test negative then AQHA automatically stamps N/N on all foal papers. If the mare is not N/N then the original owner has to have the foal tested before the foal can be registered

The mare is not the only determining factor for the foal So if she tests n/n all foals are. not automatically stamped n/n. Half of the hypp factor comes from the sire. So if both mare and stud have been tested nn the baby will be stamped. If the mare is nn and the stud nh the baby could be either because it takes one factor from each. Example it will get an n from the mare because she is double n. It will get either the studs n or his h. Making the baby nn or nh. So the baby was either tested or both parents tested nn

If the stud doesn't go back to impressive and the mare is n/n then the foal would be n/n. If the foal is exhibiting symptoms and you want to confirm no errors have been made its an affordable hair follicle test.
