Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | Looking for information and opinions on these treatments. Have a horse that has developed arthritis pretty bad in his front right pastern. It's been expressing some swelling for a while (no heat). Been xrayed and ultra sounded with no other cause seen for the symptoms. Been injected, which does help but hasn't gotten him back to 100%. PHT wraps do help with the swelling when he has to be stalled, and he's better when turned out.
I know either would require off time, which he's already getting, and will be until at least late fall if not a little longer (I'm pregnant). But, I really know very little about the therapies so I'm trying to do my research and see if it's a good option for him, or if it's possibly time to retire him :( He loves to run barrels, and isn't "old" yet, so if he can continue comfortably I want to try to get him there. |

Location: the other T-town, Oklahoma | I don't have any experince with Stem Cell, but I am sold on PRP! Did it on an arthritic knee on my mare. She came back better than ever. Did 3 injections 2 weeks apart, no BUTE for about 6 weeks after last injection. I gave her the 3 months off and she came back running top 2D behind some tuffies here in Oklahoma. I have seen it work wonders on people and am sold on it for my mare. |

Location: Texas | what about fusing the joint? the pastern joint is low motion, it would probably be better off if you fused it like people fused hocks. Just an idea. |

I did it two different times, about 18 months apart. I would only get about 6 good weeks out of a steroid injection in her knees, but a good year and a half from the PRP. I still when I was able to gave her bute the day before and the day of a show. |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | PRP doesn't always help joints--I'm sure it depends on what the problem is. My horse has thinned cartilage in his fetlocks without any spurs or chips, and he got 15 months out of his last PRP treatment. Had him done again last week.
His hocks were surgically fused 5 years ago, and we discovered last year that one of them had broken apart, leaving a pinchy joint space. My vet did PRP on it and he hasn't had any more hock pain. The joint space was closed back up when we checked last week. I don't know that it actually did anything directly, but at the very least it helped with his pain so he used it better, helping along the fusion. It blew up huge after getting injected, scared us all to death. |
