Location: In the saddle enjoying the East Texas sky | What can you tell me about freezing embryos for next years breeding season. Is it worth it to pay to store them all year. What is the average cost for pulling eggs, embryos, etc (feel free to correct me on the difference, I don't know better) holding them and then transplanting them to a recip mare? Any horror stories? Do's and donts? I have the opportunity to buy an older mare, but I want to make sure if I got her and something happens between now and next year I won't be out of a baby and feed. | |

| I accidentally fell into freezing an embryo because my ET mare was ready to ship again before the recip mare was ready to be checked for pregnancy. Then they weren't satisfied with the way the embryo looked, I think because it was a little larger than they like to freeze, so they did another one at no cost to me. The stallion owner had me go ahead and pay an additional stud fee, so I had that, along with shipping, breeding, flushing costs. If I remember correctly the actual cost to store the frozen embryos wasn't all that much. Unfortunately neither one of the embryos worked, but I had a LFG with the stud fee so I just ended up shipping and breeding again with cooled semen.
