I have a mare that I just started running that is a free runner. She was running in a wire bonnet tie down, and a combo snaffle with a steel nose band. I HATE her in that. I've been running her in just a leather tie down and twisted wire dog bone . She slow works like a dream and she is very soft mouthed but she is super fast and when we make a run I'm having a hard time getting her to turn, she over runs them. She has been vet checked and chiro. Bit opinions?

What did you not like about the other set up? That it is a pretty aggressive set up or a particular way the mare worked? Have you tried a leather bonnet?

Molly Powell has alot of great bits! I got her "Rate and Turn" and it has worked wonders! I have a free runner and this long shanked port has got my horse rating with no pulling and he now runs without a tie down! Best of Luck!

I know how you feel, I try to ride my horses in not so tought bits but sometimes that's just the way it is with some that are used to this type of bit. But if she is overrunning her barrels sound like to me you are not helping her to set for her turns. Sounds like shes not rating her barrels. Cant really say unless theres a video to watch to see how you are riding her. But without seeing its hard to say but the way you told us just sounds like theres no rating barrels. But a free runner can be tricky to ride.

Yes! Molly put my horse in the long shank chain bit she has. He used to run in a combo and tie down. Now I have full control and bend and don't need a tie down. I love it!

I love my Molly Powell 1st barrel bit on my gelding. It gives a lot of control without being overly harsh. I don't run in any tie downs on him. My mare was running in a short shank '1st barrel' copy bit, but Ty Mitchell told us to try a Josey Go Around bit on her and I love her even more in that. A LOT less to look at, but still plenty of control while letting her actually run too.
