Location: North Carolina | My family & I are looking to possibly move out west in a year or two & can't decide on where exactly. Will have to be within 2 hrs of a decent sized city (at least 25k). We lived in WY for only a few weeks before we had to leave because the job went south & we really want to get back out there again as we've never felt more at home. I'm gonna throw a huge net out there as we'll look into basically any state in the west, southwest & northwest. I want to find somewhere with a good amount of races in the region (under 6 hr trips). Please tell me about average cost of land (would need at least 25 acres), hay, feed, vet care etc. in your area. Thanks in advance! |

Location: TN | I lived in Stillwater, Oklahoma, while going to OSU and I loved it! You've got the Lazy E arena in Guthrie and the huge fairgrounds in Oklahoma City less than an hour away. I'm not sure on land prices, but it's a fun college town. Small town feel while still having all the necessities you could want. If I could have convinced my SO to leave TN and move out there I would have stayed. |

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | Utah has barrel racing from one end of the state to the other end of the state.Every day of the week with many within close distance. Cost of land will vary from one end the other you just have to look. |

| Bend, Redmond Oregon area definitely would be my pick if I were to go anywhere. Not sure what the going rate for alfalfa per ton is, however great vets and lots of races!. Portland area is about 2 1/2 hours away and Medford is about 3 hours. As far as property prices John L Scott is easy to use and lists all current mls listings from any listing agency. Treasure valley Idaho would be my second pick. |

That post actually gave me the idea for my post. That one is giving me good info for the PNW but not the whole west. |

I currently live 30 minutes South of Sheridan. I would not choose it if you are wanting to barrel race a lot. We have a few local things in the Summer but you are going to have to travel at least 2 hours to get to anything "local". Billings, Casper or Gillette are where most of the barrel races are.
That is the biggest thing I miss about Utah, it was easy to get to most everything. |

Depends on where you want to live. Most of the state sees all 4 seasons. Southern Utah may get a little snow but you can pretty much ride and run outside all year long down there.
Tons of barrel races throughout the state all year long. |

Anywhere in Utah you will have a view of the mountains. There aren't many places I would say to stay away from but Northern Utah is my favorite. I am from just outside of Ogden. You can get from the top of the state to the bottom in less than 6 hours. Plus you have all the races in Wyoming and Idaho to go to as well. |

I don't live there and have been to limited parts of the state but if were to live in Utah I'd choose Logan - beautiful and a little bit of everything, close (about an hour or so drive) to Salt Lake City but reminds me of a large farming town (and decent economy with Utah State Univ. right there). |

Location: Where I am happiest | I am from Oregon but now live in Utah. I hate Utah!!! It is to freaking cold to be outside in the winter, and to freaking hot to be outside in the summer!!! You will get high's in the teens for week's on end in the winter and lows in the single digits and below. Right now, it's 97 outside and the forecast for the next 6 days ( which is as far as the forecast goes ) is for 102 - 105. The good thing about Utah is we have a awsome, absolutelly awsome governer and it is indeed a red state. Everybody talks about how beautiful Utah is, and I'm like....... Really? Oregon is breathtaking beautiful and much more temperate. Utah has beautifull mountains, but thats it. St. George is kind of pretty with it's red rocks. We get our alfalfa hay from the next door neighbor and it's $190 a ton for beautiful hay. There is alot of barrel races here but I guess I'm just not dedicated enough to fight all the eliments to ride. I have no interest in riding in a foot of snow and ice and single digit temp's. Then it thaws out, and the spring rains come so it's a muddy mess. Then all of a sudden, it's 90 and above and dusty as heck.So my horse sits. Personally, I cant wait to move back to Oregon! Just wish I could take the political scene to the blue voting Portland and Eugene that out votes the rest of the state.

I lived in Utah my whole life up until 6 years ago and still spend a lot of time there as that is where all my family is.
I do not think it is as bad as she is stating. I live in Wyoming currently and you know how bad Wyoming winters can be. Utah winter are not as bad as here. Yes it does get all 4 seasons but there is little to no humidity there. I would rather spend a winter in Utah than a winter and summer in Texas. Winters in Texas kill me with the humidity. |

Location: Oklahoma | I LOVED Fort Collins, CO. When I lived there, I miss it a lot. ( I now Madill, OK) I would go back to Colorado in a heartbeat. Pretty good weather. I rode year around there, barrel racing is pretty plentiful. And couldnt beat the looking at those Moutains. I love living here in Texoma to, Barrel racing central around here. Never have to drive more then 2 hours to get to one. About 2 hours either direction to DFW or OKC. Wish we could afford a summer in winter home! |
