I have a 18yo cat and she is infested with fleas.. We have been treating them for about a month now and decided to give her a bath today. They are everywhere. Is okay to shave her ? Her hair is just so thick idk how else we are gonna get to them. She is an indoor cat and not our only animal but she is by far the worst. We have the flea treatment you put on their neck, flea spray, gave her a flea bath, and I think we are gonna go buy collars today, I figured someone on here would have better experience dealing with this, we have never had fleas before. Thank you in advance!

eta: this may be even more dumb than asking if I should shave her, but our other cat has been prescribed a cat version of xanax, should we give her half his dose? or the same dose? or just no on that all together.

I know its horrible for a cat to be hairless but I also know the fleas are just eating her alive.. I don't want her to have a heart attack if we try to shave her but Im also not sure she's ever had this medicine. I just feel like im at a dilemma here.

Easiest way to treat fleas is to keep washing the Cat, DAWN ORIGINAL soap will kill fleas and ticks, but if there is any eggs anywhere, in the house etc.. she will continue to get them over and over .. it takes a long time to get rid of fleas. Dawn is the cheapest and very effective. You can Buzz a cat. But that doesnt guarantee getting rid of fleas, they are VERY pesky. Goodluck!

We had a long haired tortishell and we shaved her many summers! She looked kinda funny at first and her little gut hung out but I think it's cute and she seemed happier, lol. Anyways I think that it would help the fleas!

if you do shave her, would it be possible to have someone video it? if your kitty is anything like mine it would make great entertainment

She is actually pretty well behaved for a cat... I gave my younger cat a bath and let's just say if you have never heard a cat yell "NOOOOOOOO!" 5 million times in a row clear as day.. It it was pretty funny! Not worth all the scratches I got though..

Dawn dish soap  kills fleas and flea eggs on contact. It is a good start at least. Get her neck area wet, add dawn dish soap to that area then start from the tail and work your way up. The fleas will run towards her neck and die. I'm all for shaving her but after working at many vets we always had to sedate the cats to get them done. So good luck! lol

When we do this, do we have to get all of the dead ticks off of her? We gave her a bath today with tick wash but it didn't seem to kill them, we then spent 3 hours picking the fleas off her hair, all mostly alive. If we shave her I will forsure try and film it

If you shave your cat, the hair needs to be COMPLETELY DRY. Cat hair is very fine and hard on clippers. I clip my cat's hair routinely, she loves it, but if you've never done it I'd highly recommend taking her to a groomer. However, it will NOT get rid of the fleas.

the vet has triflexis for cats.. get it and it will make them drop off .. if there are fleas eggs in house they wont bother her.. its in her blood stream..you can bath all you want and treat her but until you treat home and put her on somethig orally they will continue to bother her even shaved

Get a feed through from your vet and vacuum every other day. Will make a ton of difference.

I would bomb your house with a flea spray to kill all fleas and eggs, give your cat a good flea bath and ask your Vet about Revolution, kills fleas heartworms, ear mites the list gos on, Its a drop that you use on your cats once a month, but i can go two months on my house cat and its wonderful look it up and it does work...

Murphy's Oil Soap works like a dream for fleas on my dog. Don't see why it wouldn't work for your cat. Plus I love the way Luca smells afterwards!

Hope you get it figured out quickly cause I know it makes them and you miserable.

A word of caution, do not use multiple products at one time, they can be too much for the cat, especially if she is older. Give the cat a bath using the Dawn Dish soap, it's safe. Either use the topical flea treatment or the pill or a flea collar but don't combine. Treat your house for fleas, not just the cat. You can take her to the vet and have them shave her, they might use a mild sedative to keep her calm.

If this was my cat I would not shave her, its not going to keep the fleas off by shaving all her hair off, give her a good bath, treat your house and all her bedding with a good flea spray. I like the flea bomb's they work wonders call your Vet about the Revolution, but I would not shave her and then be putting stuff on her, you may just make her really sick or worst.

A friend at work had her cat shaved at a groomer. The cat was never the same.  Chewed constantly at its skin evidently traumatized.
