What feed? How much per bag? How much are you feeding per day?
Do you add supplements and what are they? Why do you feel that they are needed? How much do they cost? |

I have a horse that needs biotin all the time or his feet fall apart. Benefits of the omegas in the flax are noticeable. Horses are on pasture when they're not being rode-no hay until winter. Summer heat is beet pulp based and adds some zip and shine to the 2 that need it. The other 3 really don't need much but they are easier to catch and deal with if you feed them :) |

I feed mixed hay, 70% timothy, 30% alfalfa. Available in slow feeders.
Three year old gets 1 1/2 pound of Renew Gold per day @ $30 per bag = $1.50 per day
mature horses get 1 pound of Renew Gold per day @ $30 per bag = $1.00 per day
They all get Redmond Salt = about $0.25 per day per head.
Instead of additional supplements, I spend that money on better roughage and better attention to teeth. I do use an electrolyte when conditions call for it. I also would use a probiotic when it makes sense to do so, but not on a daily basis. I have access to good roughage if I choose to use my feeding budget to that end, and I do. If I did not, I would use a quality hay cube to support the grass hay and slow the hind gut down some for better break down of the fast moving grass hay roughage. Over all cost, of supporting the roughage is $1.40 to $2.00 per day/ per head.
No ulcers, no colic, calm energy because there is not an overfeed of starch and sugars.
simple and cost effectrive.
$550 plus roughage cost per year on mature horses, $730 plus roughage cost per year on my three year old. This includes electrolyte in summer.

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | Right now, I'm spending $78.35/month on my barrel horse. $61 for supplements and $17.35 for feed. Hay is an additional $20-50 per month but I'm not really feeding any at this time because my pasture is in great shape.
The supplements are a vit/mineral/probiotic because his feed is unfortified, and a vit E supplement because he's had immune issues in the past.
I wish I hadn't looked. LOL |

| I am in the process of transitioning over to Nutrena Senior. But Both my horses were getting 2 pounds a day of ultium and FORCO. ALso feed one scoop Formula 707 daily essentials cause they were not being fed at the regular feeding dosage on the bag. Electrolytes as needed. Tight Joints plus Joint supplement. They have access to 24/7 alfalfa orchard grass mix hay. My horses would not touch timothy ( WHich is fine at 30.00 a bale) and they did not do well on Renew Gold and I tried it for 5 months. |

| Here is what I was feeding - Custom Grain Mix: $110/50 lbs = $0.20 lb ADM Healthy Glo: $30/40 lbs = $0.75 lb
I was feeding 5 to 10 lbs of grain plus a pound of Healthy Glo daily, so worked out to be $1.75 to $2.75 daily. But with all the ADM problems I recently started Renew Gold. With that it is $1 to $1.5 per horse, and I am slowly cutting out their grain. Not sure if I'll be able to cut it completly out, but I'll see. |

I know...but, the people that I was helping out with their budgets were actually feeding more than the recommended amount and not seeing the results that they wanted.
The biggest issue that I see with horses in our area is the lack of quality forage....and people are not feeding enough of it anyway. People seem to want to feed more and more concentrate and add fat supplements instead of getting a more natural source of quality nutrition. |

Location: Lost in the swamps | Again here to If I would feed the reccomended rate horses would be obease but my area store doesn't stock renew gold or anything comeparable. They look at you like your dumb when you ask for it. Even tr supply doesn't stock it in my area. All they stock is nutrena boost.
But I do see what your getting at is gettig result and cost per pound ratio on certain feeds. For instance one feed is say 12.99 but you need to feed 10# a day vs a 15.99 bag that says feed 6# a day.

Location: NE Texas | I completely agree with the lack of quality forage in this region (TX, OK). I would prefer to feed alfalfa/grass mix, but unfortunately it isn't available in my area, and the alfalfa that is available scares me due to blister beetles. Pretty much the only thing available is coastal and it's hard to tell good Coastal from bad.
I currenlty am feeding Bluebonnet Omega Force Intensify as well, Cur-Ost supplements for respiratory issue, but these supplements also aid inflammatory control. I do feed coastal once daily to one horse, but he's out on grass the other half of the day. All others out on grass right now.
If I could get good quality alfalfa mix, I would feed whole oats once daily, just enough to mix in my Cur-Ost. |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | 8 head - 5 riding horses (4 @1200+ pounds; 1@ 1,000 pounds) and 3 pasture ornaments (500-900 pounds)
RIDING HORSES - Total Equine (was feeding original Strategy) (TOTAL per day) 1 scoop feed 1-2 cups flax seed & rice bran 1 scoop alfalfa cubes 2 flakes grass mix hay Night turn out on decent pasture
1 horse is on Super Sport for more energy 2 horses are on DMG - they loose condition quicker than the others 3 are on joint supplements **winter time I up the alfalfa cubes since their pasture is minimal & throw out a couple flakes of hay per horse
PASTURE HORSES 1 & 1/2 scoop per day of Pinnacle Balancer Winter time I keep a round bale out.
We have about 10 acres total in pasture. The reason I switched to Total Equine is that their feet seem to do better on that than Strategy -- I was feeding the same amount.
If they slack off on weight during the winter, I make up the weight with alfalfa cubes & fat.
We got through aabout 700 square bales, and 40 round bales per year. I go through a little over a bag of cubes per week, 4 bags of TE per week, and about a bag of flax and a bag of rice bran a month. |

I feed Legends performance pelleted. Daily they each get Equipride, the 8 yr old also gets Gastroade. I supplement with electrolytes as needed (hot humid days and on race days). The Legends is $20.99 a bag (3 bags per month) I only grain once a day with free choice hay and some pasture. They get fed 1 lb and 3-4 lbs (use a 13oz coffee can) respectively. The Equipride is 59.99 for 50 lbs. Not sure how long it will last me since I was only buying the 25lb previously. I am sure it will be at least 2 mos. The gastroade is $36 and lasts me 2 mos at 1 feeding per day. |

Location: OKLAHOMA | Rachelly, I agree to the forage thing. I am in NE OK also have always fed good hay and some pasture time. I think if folks could just backup and do more GOOD forage there ponies would not need some of the extra's... MIne look great on 1LB of RG and pasture with little Chaffhaye, No supplements at this time.. If i start riding more and going again i will check into maybe some supp's. By the way thank you for sharing your knowlege with us, i do greatly appreciate it. |

| I also agree with the forage and yes it is hard in this area to get good horse hay. Right now though mine are on pasture and I have finally been able to get my pastures in descent shape, not the best but better than what it was. I only feed the Bluebonnet feed and probably not the recommended amount. I also give cubes wet and just enough to put their supplements or medicine in. When we were having so much rain I was having tendon issues but now they have all leveled off and just do a maintenance program. So Rachel are you only feeding the cubes? No grain at all? |

We have a custom mix (oats, purina amplify, plus minimal molasses) it gets ran after the run their sweet feed mix so it usually has a little more molasses than what we actually pay for.
$175 for 800#/ 30 days (probably closer to 5 wks but I'll be generous) = $5.83/day = Cost: $.97/horse grain cost (eating a little over 4# per day).Platinum is fed to 5 of them Cost $1.80/horse/day
I don't have to feed hay year round - maybe November through early March or I'm hauling to a show. I spend $800/year for my cold grazer seed and fertilizer. So that's another $160/year per horse ($.45/day).. So $3.22/day per horse
We raise our own alfalfa and it's expensive. I think last I ran number it cost almost $1.20/day when I feed it.. So that's running about $4.42 avg per day per horse to feed and hay (so maybe December - early March).
If not haying it drops back to the $3.22/day.

I have a few that are getting Omnis cubes only, but most of ours are still getting a little Bluebonnet Omega Force. We are feeding about 2# twice a day and 10# of Omnis cubes to most of them and they're on pasture at night. After what mine have been through I want to be sure that they're able to hold their body condition while going back into training before I make any other feed changes. Omnis cubes have been an excellent addition to our feed program and we aren't feeding hardly any grass hay now. Greg throws them some in their stalls, but they mostly make a mess out of it. People in other areas have no idea how much relief comes with having a truckload of high quality alfalfa cubes in the barn. We fight every year with trying to find the best quality alfalfa hay that we can and then are always disappointed with the stems and wasted hay on the ground....not anymore! |

What feed?
How much per bag?
How much are you feeding per day?
Do you add supplements and what are they?
Why do you feel that they are needed?
How much do they cost?
Renew Gold-1 to 1.5lbs depending on horse Standlee Alfalfa Pellets-2-2.5lbs depending on horse
The only supplement I currently give is a THE Muscle Mass custom blend I feed it because none of the feeds they are on are fortified feeds and my horses don't get much fresh grass (only around 4 hours a week). The THE also has special stuff for my horse with allergies, poor hooves, all that so it targets his specific needs. Renew Gold $29.99 a bag Alfalfa pellets $13ish a bag THE is...um...$110 I think for 80 servings.
I also feed Whole oats and whole flaxseeds but didn't mention those because they aren't commercial feeds and the oats are included in my board so they cost me nothing.

| I currently only have 1 horse.
Sentinel performance LS $22/ 50lbs
I'm feeding 3 lbs a day.
24/7 access to pasture.
Free choice Himalayan rock salts
When it starts getting colder, as much hay as he needs. I usually get beet pulp and alfalfa cubes and soak them in warm water for him to have too. |

With the second one being hurt and on antibiotics, I would sure look into adding some sort of digestive support for him. |
