I actually thought pin firing was an outdated and illegal thing these days. Many years ago, I had a veterinarian tell me, as he was looking at the scars of a horse I bought that had been pin-fired, that it was one of the most in-humane things you could do to a horse. I thought I remembered him telling me that it was illegal; but maybe he meant just in our state. Is it still legal to do most places?
My experience when my horses get a bump on their leg 9/10 they have fractured the splint bone, 1/10 they bruised the splint bone. With proper treatment the splints go away and the legs are clean
I just saw Dr Brunk in Nebraska. My horse had splints on both legs. He said under extreme pressure of barrel racing, there can be just about give in there to cause pain. He advised I pin fire the splints to make sure they heal up really well, so I did.. Didn't have time to research first, so I'm trusting him.. Done now, so we will see I guess

My paint horse had a splint oñ both front legs. Vet painted each one with his secret potion and they disappeared. That was about 9 years ago. They never came back.
