I've used the heaviest zinc oxide containing diaper rash cream I can find (30% I think) usually desitin but theres a couple different varieties-look at the ingredients.  Put on daily, scrub occassionally. Messy but worked for me.

I have recently just dealt with this.  All this water is killing me...LOL  My gelding has black legs and still got scratches...He swelled up all the way to his knee.  I used a mixture of desitin (diaper rash), and antifungal cream.  Mix together and put wipe it on the spot, thick.  Swelling came down in a day and now the sores are healing up.

Sauerkraut grab a handful vet wrap it in place change every 1-2 days for a week.

This was my vets recommendation and works like a dream.

Reason if works is you need to change the ph of the skin to get rid of the fungus

He has white legs and I keep him up during the day and turn out at night due to the heat.

If you want to get rid of this, you are going to have to alter your turn out schedule so that he is not in the wet dew grass all night.  You've got to keep the legs & pasterns DRY!

Where did you get the antifungal cream? Drug store or vet? This one sounds like a reasonable approach to me.

You can get it at Walmart, dollar store, etc....It's just antifungal like what you would treat for athlete's foot.

T-Bone -- IF it would quit raining here in Oklahoma they would stay dry. I just now got the barn dried out from flooding and now they are predicting another 4-5 inches of rain.

I also thought about putting Diatomaceous Earth on them. Works for me when I break out in a heat rash.

I asked this question a few weeks ago and got a lot of similar answers.

My horse's wasn't too bad to deal with and really went away rather quickly.  I used witch hazel 2x per day until I was able to get an antifungal spray.  Luckily it dried up for about a week while I was trying to get the scratches cleared up so I didn't have to worry about her legs being wet 24/7.  I ended up buying Fungasol spray (by Absorbine) and using that 2x per day - replacing the witch hazel - and it was cleared up within 7-10 days.  I'm not sure if that's a normal healing time since it's the first time I'd dealt with it, but it seemed a lot easier than I was expecting.

I did just pick up a rescue mare over the weekend that I think has scratches also, but she won't let me touch her feet yet or spray anything and she's at a friend's house for quarantine so I haven't been able to work with her much.  I'm concerned she's going to be much more difficult to clear up.

ABSOLUTELY WILL WORK. Icthamol. Slather it on freely. Even works in rain and wet pastures. It keeps out the moisture, while letting the medication work.

My 4 year old mare has what seems to be a pretty mild case of scratches, however, all of her legs are swelled from it. I just started applying Desitin with 40% zinc oxide last night. How long does the swelling usually take to go down? Anything else I can give her to help with the swelling? This particular horse seems to be sensitive to fungus/bacteria issues.

I cold hosed my geld's leg before I applied the zinc oxide and fungus cream.  I also ran my fingers around the area and got all the crusty's off.  It took a good 2 days for all the swelling to go all the way down, but I noticed a difference in a couple hours. Make sure you get all the crusty scabs off and apply the mixture on thick. If the scratches are really bad I would take clippers and shave the area so the medicince can soak in a work.

edited to say--Make sure you also us an antifungal cream with the zinc oxide.  Some sort of athlete's foot cream. It can be a generic cream.  Mix the zinc oxide and antifungal cream together.

I think I got mine from Big Dees or Valley Vet Supply. I bought it for a horse we suspected had an abscess but he didn't so I have a big jar sitting around lol.

A good majority of our horses had scratches this year from all the rain.  We tried everything but MTG worked the best.  Also good to worm again with Ivermectin, and for the really bad horses we gave them a round of Uniprim.  Our worst case took about 10 days to heal.  With MTG most cleared up in around 3 days.
