| We are proceeding with a pro sent divorce. We are sheeting on everything ourselves. That said is there any reason I need an attorney? I'm not trying to take everything, I'm being fair. |

Location: So. California | I don't know what a pro sent divorce is, do you mean pro per divorce? If you have realestate or property of any value, then yes, you need to hire an attorney to handle the legalease of the paperwork. In the long run, it will be beneficial to you both. |

| Get an attorney. Even in the best of situations, feelings are going to heat up and people act impulsively. If you have any shared assets at all you need one. |

An attorney told my daughter he made more money off of folks that went into the divorce with all good between them and one of them got mad and went to court over a chair or a table that belonged to so n so's grandmother

Location: North Dakota | I would get an attorney as well. Legal document (ownership of house, land, etc) they will need to take care of for you.
Even if you are having a civil agreement, always have an attorney. They are going to think of things that you would forget about. That's what they are there for. It's their job.

Location: the end of the rainbow | if the 2 of you agree on everything you can get an attorney to draw up a joint petition and a divorce decree for you. Most areas have a self help center or the court can provide the necessary forms for you to do the paperwork pro se. If you are both in agreement on the split of all property & there are no children involved save the money and do it yourself. |

Agreed! My ex and I divorced for $175 total. We agreed on everything, had no kids together and divided up the assets. If there was any contention, I would say get an attorney, but if you're sure it's amicable why waste the money? |

Agreed! My ex and I divorced for $175 total. We agreed on everything, had no kids together and divided up the assets. If there was any contention, I would say get an attorney, but if you're sure it's amicable why waste the money?
My cousin and her ex pretty much agreed on everything so they went to attorney together and used same one. Think whole thing was less than 500. The attorney said he had never seen such a nice divorce. . . |

Do you own property? When was it acquired? How was it acquired? Do you have equity in the property?
Do you have joint bank accounts?
Do you have joint debt?
Do you have IRA's, 401ks, pensions, retirement?
How is medical insurance handled?
How long was your marriage?
Do you have children?
The answers aren't really needed … the questions are simply to ask yourself. Those are all questions that would help one determine if you need or should at least consult an attorney. These are the issues that commonly cause conflict in a divorce. If one of you shows up with another significant other or starts dating … that seems to trigger conflicts in an otherwise cordial divorce. Just my suggestion.

I just wanted it over with and done. Divorce is already tough, I wasn't trying to drag it out or make it any harder than it already was. |

This is where I'm at. We agreed how to split everything. I'm not getting near what I could money wise, but really not sure it's worth it. I'm afraid it will make life way worse for me to fight it. |
