Hey everyone! Like the title says, I was wondering what you all do to leg your horses back up and get them in top shape again after they've had time off? I was out working for three weeks in Texas (I live in Idaho) and my horses were out on belly deep pasture the whole time and, as expected, are very plump now lol We're just now really getting into rodeo and barrel racing season here so I need to get them in top shape again.

To start, I've pulled them off pasture and they are back in our lot that has very short grass and not a lot of it at that. They are each getting about two flakes of timothy along with one flake of alfalfa and a full scoop (one of those big grain scoops) of sweet feed (just an all around feed, nothing special). My gelding is also on T.H.E. Muscle Mass. As far as exercise, what do ya'll do to leg one back up? Just looking for new ideas :) Thanks!

Start small and work up to major workouts... I would do circles and basics in the arena at a jog/slow trot for 20 minutes and gradually add on to that.
Once your horse has worked off some of that belly and got his/her mind back on the working life, then I'd start doing more like long trotting flats until they develop a little bit more muscle and then work hills.  Develop a routine and keep to it to build their muscle and maintain it.
I have a huge field behind my house with random hills. My horses do two laps to each direction long trotting and only walking down the hills.
