I know some people don't have this problem but I do haha, I know my horse has more speed to give but I just can't get him to open up and really run, I know it's nothing to do with soundness or saddle fit... I've ruled that out.... If anyone can help I will love you long time!

Do they not run while on pattern or out in the open when you ride? I had one a few years ago that couldn't figure it out, he would get nervous right befor he
Would be at the cross over point of running. Ended up working cows on him one day and sent him after one and it clicked that he could run. I guess he wasn't thinking about what he was doing just thinking about catching up to the cow.

It's both..... It's hard to explain but it's almost like he's afraid to go fast with me... My brother has taken him team penning and he did just fine, but he won't open up for me when we're team penning or moving cows either....? Any ideas?

Mine did that, it was funny you could feel him wanna try but he seamed to be scared like you say yours is. Maybe try getting him to run with some friends with you riding. Maybe he will be more focused on them than worrying about running with you. He will figure it out that he can run with you. It sounds like he is unsure of himself with you on him.

Well I bottle fed him when a baby and he is a worry wart... I thought maybe that had something to do with it, I thought maybe he was just scared until my brother hopped on him, he is very confident with everything when we ride until I ask for speed and then I can tell he holds back.... I have no idea what to do because I generally ride by myself

sometimes finding a buddy and a safe place for a sprint will do the trick. A mini match race kind of thing. If you can find a track that is also safe, it can be fun to just toss them the reins and let them pick up some speed. Often they will grab some gears just for the pure glory of it. One of the things that makes a horse magnificent is the pure joy they can get out of their own speed.
