Location: The best kept secret in TX | Has anyone had any luck with coconut oil to get a severly matted tail undone?
Heard through the grapevine to try it before trying a detangler?
Any other suggestions? Any detanglers you like?
Can't cut it... she won't have a tail at all....
Tried to sort through the home remedies post to see what I could find but there are just too many pages.... |

Location: mi | I have an older retired broodmare who's tail mats something fierce each summer. In the fall I just pull out the outside hairs that I can and cut the middle out. I have tried staying on top of it with showsheen and baby oil and..... If I miss a week. I am done. Good luck. I suppose with enough time and patience some sort of oil would eventually work but I have not found the majic stuff yet.

Location: Got Lobsta? | I have a SOF filly that has a super long mane. I had it all braided in the winter and than I regretfully let it go for a month. WELL she had some braides all matted into others and it formed a huge knot. I was actually thinking of cutting it all out. I saw an ad during a horse show for Main-ly Detanger. I put it on and left it for about 10 minutes came back and started working my fingers through it. IT ALL CAME out with a minium loss of hair! I was shocked! It hydrates it too - I used almost a half bottle but it was worth it. I will buy from them again.  |

Works well. I just spray the crud of of them with laser sheen and let it sit for a few minutes and then go to work. |

Location: Aubrey, Texas | Also, go to a beauty supply store and buy a rat-tail comb. They are about half a comb's length with a thin metal "tail." Women used to use them in the old days to tease their hair up into beehives. Start at the bottom of the know and use the tail to separate the hairs. Good luck! |

Location: North Dakota | For infrequent use I like silicone spray better than WD40, it doesn't attract dirt like the WD40, it is sold in the same section of the store....I've watched the knots fall out of the tail as they swish it. |

Location: Tulsa, Ok | Soak it in MTG and wait 24 hours. A lot of the tangles will have fallen out. Start carefully dragging a dull hoof pick thru the remaining tangle until it all loosens up. |

I have used WD-40 before as well as Cowboy Magic but I don't feel like they'll be able to even touch this big of a mat. Her tail is so matted I feel like I need to put every detangler product mentioned on it and pray one works!
I still have no idea how it matted that much that fast. Her tail goes past her fetlocks and is thick thick thick. (Hancock bred.) I dread having to spend that many hours trying to save it, but I hope it's worth it.
Buying some supplies to attack it soon. I'll try and remember to post before and after pics... Hopefully the after pic still has a tail in the picture LOL just kidding... but seriously.  |

Location: Southern Indiana | My mate has a super thick tail and when I got her the whole center was one big rats nest!!! Don't remember what I used but I like the Aussie hair insurance then I used just a regular paddle brush and started at the bottom and slowly worked section by section. I had to cut some smaller sections in order to tackle the knot but once I was done you could never tell. Coconut oil would probably help, but I would also use a good detangler. Having long hair that tangles easy....the key is to work in small sections starting from the bottom. |

| My old broodmare gets mats as big as a softball. Cowboy Magic and patience is the best I have found. Oster or Wahl mane brush start at the bottom. Work your way up. |

Sounds like it picked up some burrs. Those things will create a mess pretty quick. |

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | Wash the bee gees out of it first the smother in show sheen or detangler. Then brush on hair at a time starting at the bottom work your way up. Be pretty in no time. |

Location: In a happy place | WD 40 works well. What I like is Vetrolin Shine Spray. I always order mine from the Dover catalogue. I think you can find it at some Tractor Supplies. I soak the tail in it and walk away and leave it all night long. Always the next day the tangle will easily comb out.

We have a paint that has a mane to his shoulders, and it absolutely ties in knots somehow. Or swirls into what looks like dreadlocks. I SOAK it in Cowboy Magic and leave overnight. The next day I put more on and it usually combs right out. Hope something works for you without having to cut it out. |
