Location: Somewhere between raising hell and Amazing Grace | I have my application to register my baby, as soon as I figure out a list of names. It's been a while though since I had to register one. I am assuming some things are the same, hair for DNA, fill out the app, and include photos of markings....
But on the app there is now the option to do the disease testing. It seems pretty cheap. If I opt to do it now, what do I need to send? |

| I believe you purchase it and they send you a testing kit, which you collect tail hair from a foal and send it back in. That's what I read on the AQHA website at least.

Ok, so just fill out the forms and send them in, and they will send me what I need? I'll read the website when I have time tonight! |

| 5 panel testing is for two year olds or over ... test is not accurate at an earlier age
this information is now on the back of your registration papers ...
Check the box for DNA parentage verified ... costs the same ..
they will send you a hair kit after you start your registration
and paid for it in advance ...
5 pictures, front, rear; left right sides and a 3/4 shot for papers
put all of this on a file on your computer including if you mail it
in ... scan everything you mailed ...
Having a horse file for each horse is a good photo album of your horses life ..
just put date on sub-files .. if you buy a colt from me .. I can give you pictures
when born to the time you pick it up.. lol ..
To check if name is taken ... go to AQHA pedigrees link and type in the name ...
it will tell you if horse with same name exists or not .. while you are there ..
use $5 of your free money and get one for each horse you own ... and print
them out for your horse book or scan to computer file of that horse ..
I never send in more than the name I like best if it is not taken ...
If you intend to geld your baby ... just mark him as gelded .. and then you
don't have to remember to update papers later on ...
You can do all of this on line by using the info on your breeding certificate ..
have fun ...

Funny how it was just posted that the 5 panel test isn't accurate under 2yo. It is a DNA test! Their DNA doesn't change!

| LOL they specifically say for foal testing to send in tail hair, so obviously they do accept and use DNA from foals. DNA doesn't change as they age, they either are born with the disease or they aren't. |

If you are a member and have your login information to get on the website, I've had GREAT results registering my babies online the last few years. You get papers back in LESS than 2 weeks (usually 10 days) INCLUDING mail. This is with on farm A-I or live cover foals. The hold up for a shipped semen baby will be the testing.
If you check to see if your top name choice is available on the database, you don't have to send more than one name choice. But be SURE to mark that you don't want AQHA to name them if you care about what the name is.
If the sire of your colt is tested and you get the mare tested, the foal is automatically N/N if they are. I'm assuming you will have to have parentage verification on your foal. If so, they will mark his papers with the results unless someone is positive for something. You would order your DNA/PV test when you submit the application and pay. If you choose to test him instead of the mare, it's the same thing, you order the combo disease test/dna kit at the time of submitting the application and they will send you the kit. |

Maybe they wait two years to test it. |
