Location: Texas | Hey y'all, so I'm been thinking about my career and college and such and I just have a few questions. I've always wanted to do something that involves horses and livestock. I'm not sure what exactly I want to do yet so do y'all have any ideas? Id love to be able to work around them and be involved. Also what colleges would be best for these horse and livestock related jobs? Thanks!

| Auctioneer, animal pharmaceutical rep, veterinarian, vet tech, someone who has an animal transportation service, cattle/horse trader, animal researcher, trainer, professional cattle or horse groomer, farrier, farmer, massage therapist for animals, someone who puts insurance on animals, extension agent working with farmers, and that's all I can think of right now! There's a lot of good ag schools and trade schools out there, too many to list. It'd depend on the certain path you wanted to take! | |

Location: KS | I went to college for Animal Science, lots of opportunities. I was always a little more interested in the cattle and horse side of things, but when you major in Animal Science you get a taste of everything. And then from there you can choose to take classes that interest you a little more, whether its horse production, beef, dairy, swine, etc.
With this degree you can do anything from animal related to business related. I actually work for a CaseIH Dealership now, nothing to do with my major, but I really love my job. I was set on working with animals too, but I was lucky enough to grow up on a farm where we run registered Gelbvieh cattle and always had a fair share of horses. I married a man who grew up 10 miles away from me who also raises beef cattle, and that's what I really wanted to do, raise cattle. Somehow it all worked out and I have a great job 5 miles from our home. Im close enough I still help my folks with their operation (still get to have my own little herd there) and then my husband and I run our own, along with taking care of his dads.
When I first started college, I thought Id get a job more in to the lab work side of things. Then I got more interested in the operations where they feed out cattle for rfi, and other testing, they bring in nice bred cattle from several places and feed them out using a certain program that takes time and research to figure out the perfect program.
I chose a University, I know others will go to a community college for a couple years and then transfer to a University, but I think if you know that you what your B.A. you should just start at the University, I finished a 4 year program in 3.5 years, you can better plan those four years in the beginning, than going to a smaller college and wondering if classes will transfer. If your not sure you want to go the four years I would suggest a community or tech college.
Life will bring you lots of obstacles, do what feels right. Be strong and independent and if your willing to work hard you can do anything you want.
