My mare has only been on the pattern a little over a year and in that time has come along exceptionally well. She works a really great on the pattern when I am able to do 1 or 2 exhibition runs before my open run. However, from time to time we go places that don't have expos and on a cold pattern she'll get a little lost between barrels. Is this something to be more concerned about? Does she just need more seasoning? Do I need to do something different at home? (I don't have great ground at home, so I do a lot of legging up, slow work and some high loping the pattern.) Thank you!

2 hands and ride her to the barrels - as in WTC. She isn't ready to be on her own or 1 handed it sounds yet. Back to basics then add speed when she picks the pattern up.

I am bringing one along and am experiencing similar situations. Just keep hauling and exibitioning. Sometimes it takes a little while. My horse can be automatic at home, and we go somewhere and he acts like he doesnt know what is happening lol. Keep at it!

set up your pattern backwards (run from opposite side) in your pen and watch her come untrained LOL even in her own arena she is using too many things to help her, so upset her apple cart every once in a while

amen to that that why i ile a open arena no fences u se tires for alley way and set up all sorts of weird patterns

I personally feel like horses can become to dependent on exibitions if you don't allow them to make cold runs and the mistakes that go with them. If given the opportunity they will begin to hit the mouth of the alley looking and hunting and gain confidence in their ability to do so.

This I agree with...it can be a tough thing as a "trainer" to just trust what you've done and let them show you what their ready to do!
To the OP, do you get nervous when you have to do a cold run? That can affect the horses confidence. I remember the the first cold run I had to make on my colt...we didn't even ride in the arena prior either due to getting to the race late. I knew my guy knew his job and kept my mind solid and let him do what he knew and be there to guide him....riding colts for those of us who don't do it very regular can be a mind game...
