Location: Oklahoma & Texas | I have a 2 yr old palomino filly....she pees in her tail every time she pees! She don't quite hold it far enough out of way and she always seems to catch the underside and ends of it...any remedy for urine stains in white tails? I've used shampoo and sometimes i use vinegar and it seems to help but nothing has seemed to get it all out...I've used some shampoos that are made for whitening and even those don't seem to work...anyone have a good trick for getting em white/clean? Sometimes I braid her tail and bag it but with summer and flies I feel bad not giving her use of her tail lol |

Location: Kansas (but Great Lakes member since 1978) | Don't do it often but laundry soap and cleaning white vinegar works perfect. Mix it in a bucket and soak her tail and let it sit a short time and do it again a couple more times. Rinse it out really good and condition it. Keep it braided and that will cut down on the stains.

Location: Aubrey, Texas | I SWORE I would never own another Palomino, even though I think they're beautiful, because I was over trying to keep their manes and tails white. So what did I buy? A grey with a white mane and tail! WhenI want him to look nice I just take his regular shampoo and add a few squirts of Mrs. Stewart's Blueing to it. That is an old product that you can find in some grocery stores in the laundry section. It is used to launder white shirts- it takes the yellow out of them. I haven't had a problem with urine stains, but I think it would help. It sure takes the red clay color out! |

Location: Where I am happiest | Just shampoo it, rinse shampoo, then soak it in apple cider vinegar for about 20 minutes and rinse. For some odd reason we have had at least 1 palamino for the past 25 years. When I soak their tail in the apple cider vinegar, I just mix it 50/50 in a bucket, dunk the tail in and work it around, pour remainder over the top of the tail then wait 20 minutes to rinse.Your tail will be white, and very very soft. |

| Palominos are a piece of cake because you can use laundry detergent and regular bleach to whiten. Just use a really good human grade conditioner on it a few days running afterward, you'll be fine. Then wrap it up in a tail wrap to protect it from getting dirty.
Greys are more difficult because you can't use bleach on them. The hair is genetically of a different composition and really can go haywire. BUT if the dirty tail really bothers you, you can wash with laundry soap, blueing, etc. THEN you get the Roux FanciFull Grey Rinse (I got mine at Sally's), and put that in there. It's pretty much a miracle. Make sure to keep those tails wrapped, or the hard work is pointless. |

Location: NC | Whitening shampoo works pretty well. I get to a point with my pali that where im just done looking at how gross her tail is and it gets washed. Whitening shampoo and then i reg shampoo it and then when all done spray vetrolin shine and brush it out. it stays pretty clean for a while.. |

| I use quick silver shampoo and then I spray plain white vinegar thru their tails and let it sit a few minutes and then rinse again.. works great! |

^^^^ THIS......we used to have a light grey show pony. Just don't put in too much or you will have a "blue" tail.....don't ask me how I know that.......LOL |

Location: Canada | Purple shampoo removes the yellow stains. Quik Silver makes one and a few others. It's the same as blondes using purple shampoo to keep the brassy blonde away. It works by neutralizing the yellow brassy tones. |

| I had a white horse with a long mane and tail. I would put some Dawn dish soap with a smig of the weekly rinse for grey hair on a bristle brush and work up a lather all over body, mane & tail. He was perfectly white, that is unless I used to much of the rinse for grey hair then he would have a blue tint to him. With the blueing stuff a little goes a long ways.
