My gelding has the pattern down......first I dealt with him shouldering the first, worked counter arcs fixed that. Now.....he shuts down on the backside of first, to a trot/walk, then fires back out of it. Now, he will lope a nice pretty circle around the barrel on the right lead with no fuss. He will walk/trot the pattern with no issues, but as soon as I ask for just a bit of speed, he shuts down on that backside. He does not do this with 2nd or 3rd. I've worked drills, rolled back out of first, pretty much what I can find I've done.
He's not in pain, he was adjusted a few weeks ago, had his teeth done a week after that. I can't figure it out!

You said you did chiro and teeth. Did you also do a lameness eval? Horses with stifle problems often "lose it" on the backside of a barrel.
What happens if you switch the pattern and go the opposite way? If he then will shut down on your 2nd and 3rd but nails the 1st (the opposite way), it's gotta be a lameness issue.
